Is this Epic (medical records/MyChart) outage affecting anyone else?

In winchester VA and my local hospital is paralyzed. Their entire chart system is down due to the data centers that feed it being down. Apparently they can’t even run the MRI or CT machines or anything else without it.
I have a biopsy scheduled for a swollen lymph node that every doctor I’ve talked to assures me is not a concern. So I left and am getting rescheduled for another time since (hopefully) my issue is not critical. I was just in a waiting room with dozens of patients that had been stacking up.
I can’t imagine the chaos in the ER or anywhere else without any of the computers or machines being able to function.

Technology is great until it doesn’t work and then immediately grinds everything to a halt and takes it back to the Stone Age

Very thankful I'm out of the office today

Are you a medical professional? If so where and are you also having these issues? Just curious how big this is.

I told my wife they probably didn’t have this problem 30+ years ago but of course tons of people just died back then relative to now.

It always amazes me at these institutions that have bailed on pen and paper backups or even just having another backup service if you want to be completely tech based for when things like this happen. It’s not like we haven’t lived in a pre tech world to not have a blue print of what to do without technology.

My epic is working (not going to say where I’m at).

Nah, they do chart by hand during downtime.
Then they have to scan it in once it comes back.

I'm actually surprised Epic isn't completely connected across institutions. I use Baton Rouge Clinic for most of my healthcare but occasionally need to go into the Ochsner system for things. These systems don't seem connected in any way. Why aren't they connected? It seems like it would be pretty helpful for all of your files to be in one place, accessible by all of your healthcare providers.

That is probably a massive security concern.

I just logged into My Chart with no issues.

How? Instead, i was literally in a hospital a few months ago explaining what one doctor told another... This seems like more of a greater health care concern than security. But you might be right.

If they told you that, that’s incorrect. An order can be placed on a “downtime “ paper form and test can be performed. IT/power issues are not uncommon and tests still need to be performed.

How?
Everyone’s information ever would have to be hosted in one spot. Now if I hack your doctor, I his patients medical information. Under your proposal, I hack your doctor, I get everyone’s medical information

They told us whatever is going on they literally cannot run any machines in the hospital. I sat in the room for about 2 hours and nobody got called back for an MRI or anything. They said the president and board of the entire hospital are in emergency meetings right now with the data center companies.

They do sort of connect if systems allow it

No institution like that exists.
