Hi xxxx,

Flexible plans? We're seeking volunteers willing to change from Southwest flight #5702. For a limited time, we'll waive any fare difference and issue $40 in travel credit per Passenger in the form of a Southwest LUV Voucher(s).®

Benefits from your original reservation (as applicable) that will transfer to your new flight, subject to availability, include: Fare benefits Credit card benefits Tier status Upgraded Boarding,

EarlyBird Check-In®, and/or seat upgrade purchases will be forfeited and will not be refunded if you voluntarily change your flight. Select an eligible flight below; it may differ from your original departure date.

I paid for Early Bird. Why would anyone take 40 dollars in a voucher? Especially if you paid for Early Bird and forfeit that?

$40 is laughable. But it seems on-brand for private equity.

So they give you $40 voucher but you lose cost of early bird?

This only makes sense to you if another flight is better for you than the one you booked.

Got the same exact message for my flight on Friday. Deleted it immediately.

In this case they offer a later flight that gets there at 1 am or a flight the next day.

I got one for this Friday as well. It was an offer of $20 for me to take a flight with an 6 hour layover instead of 1 hour layover. Hard pass.

It’s incredible how much PE has destroyed that brand in such little time

They think your time is only worth $4 an hour. Disgusting.

Flight is oversold and they are trying to get ahead of it. I suspect they figure a decent part of their passenger base would view that as a good offer and take it.

Delta will occasionally offer the same thing at check in where you either select what you would take to voluntarily bump off a flight (like $50-150), or you input the number.

I used to game the system and get bumped off flights after buying a Y fare when I was a kid.

Oversold flights are WAY less prevalent these days thanks to much more sophisticated revenue management practices at airlines. However, after the incident in Chicago a few years back when flights are oversold and they need volunteers at the gate... the compensation can grow very big.

Friendly note, if you are ever INVOLUNTARILY denied boarding due to an oversold flight (very rare), look up "DOT CFR Part 250" the Federal law which covers your rights and the airline's obligations in those situations. It protects the passenger fairly well.

Many years ago (early 2000s), I regularly traveled to Lima, Peru for work. The Delta return flight to Atlanta was always over booked. The offer to voluntarily wait a day was hotel, food voucher, cab fares, and either upgrade to 1st class the following day or a free companion ticket good for a year. I took the offer several times over a two year period. An extra night in Mira Flores was always welcome.

And not just commercial, but Southwest?

Good Lord. How poor are you?

Wife, kids, and I were flying home from vacation this summer on American—took a re-route change as volunteers, 4 hour delay, $800 per ticket.

My only guess is they overbooked and they throw the dice hoping one of the other flights works better for a few folks. Because I know once you get to airport new rules apply on compensation.

I had a surprisngly positive experience with Southwest a couple of months ago.

We were flying home from Montana to Nola with a connection in Dallas. Our flight to Dallas was delayed due to weather, so we missed our connecting flight to Nola and had to stay the night in Dallas.

Southwest gave us 3 $200 vouchers and compensated us for the $250 hotel room in Dallas. I was very surprised since it was a weather issue and not Southwest.
