Always loved the smell and thinking of getting one.

I just smoke Prince Albert and get a lot of compliments.

It is not just a rabbit hole, it is an entire rabbit warren.
Dunhill Nightcap is a mild, easy tobacco for entering into it.

you really need to go to a tobacco store and look at both. I used to get pipe tobacco from Bayou Humidor but Sarah shut it down and moved after Mike passed. Both the pipe and pipe tobacco are a personal choice. Not like cigars where one style/blend may be pleasing to all.

Smell and taste can differ greatly. Don't go in thinking the smoke will taste like it smells.
I haven't smoked in 20 years but black cherry was my favorite scent but not my favorite smoke. I can't remember the blend I used to get at the Lakeside smoke shop that was my favorite.

Cult Blood Red Moon
This stuff is delicious
As for pipes, its really up to you. I would suggest getting a cheap corn cob pipe before buying anything expensive. Corn cob pipes wear out quicker than wooden pipes but they are cheap and work really well.

This. I get a couple blends from Don Juan in Metairie.

This was my first mistake. Thinking a vanilla blend would taste like it smelled. Yes you do taste the hints of vanilla but its still mostly a tobacco taste. I really had to try a multitude of tobaccos before I found the 2 blends that I like most. Ons of them is the Cult Blood Red moon that I linked above and the other is a blend called Pirates chest from a small tobacconist in St. Charles, Mo. I have to call them by phone to order it.

I order all of my tobacco from places away from me. below is a link to the country squire which is a tobacco shop in Mississippi that has a bunch of blends. I like Tombigbee from them. Its a distant 3rd place but I do enjoy it as a change of pace.

At least one of Country Squire's blends was put together by my good buddy who works there.

Strongly second the Country Squire. I prefer their Choctaw blend, but I like aromatics.
The good thing about pipe tobacco is that there are tons of blends so you can keep trying until you find your favorite. That also happens to be the bad thing. It's still a lot cheaper than cigars and much classier than cigs and vaping.

I smoke a tobacco pipe occasionally, which is mandatory for males going back at least 5 generations.
Best pipe: Savinelli. Nothing else is as good, but I do have a couple of Sranleys I like. I have meersvhaum, morta, clay in addition to briar.
"Best smelling" would mean aromatics, but dont smoke that terrible shite.
Smoke an English or Oriental like a real man. Trust me, it's way better anf it's a cooler smoke, so you won't get tongue bite as a new piper.

I have several thousand dollars of high end pipe tobacco. Everything from Esoterica to Father Murphy to stuff from Country Squire to original Dunhill and Frog Morton.
If someone is genuinely interested, I will send some samples for you to experiment with.
My favorite--Seattle Pipe Club brand Plum Pudding
I have one closet and the space underneath one bed crammed full of tins, bags and Mason jars that my wife keeps threatening to make disappear.

I got into pipes because I found Cigars to be too heavy. WIth Pipe tobacco I can fine 1) and aromatic that smells nice and 2) a more mild blend that isn't so spicy on the tongue or heavy on the stomach.

I enjoy that I am keeping an old tradition alive. I mostly smoke my pipes during the fall and winter. Its a nice cold weather activity. I particularly enjoy it while camping or sitting around a fire in the backyard.

I severly dislike the gatekeeping some do when it comes to tobacco. Let every man enjoy what they want to enjoy. No one says you have to smoke aromatics but it doesn't make soemone else less of a man if they do.
