John Bel Edwards won't run for U.S. Senate, dashing Louisiana Democrats' hopes

Former Gov. John Bel Edwards on Monday dashed the dreams of Democrats who hoped he would jump into next year's U.S. Senate race.
Edwards said he will stay out of an election where Sen. Bill Cassidy is facing a strong challenge from three other Republicans.
Edwards had never shown any interest in running. But he said he has received numerous entreaties to do so, less than two years after ending his two-term governorship.
“After giving it careful consideration, we have decided that now is not the right time to re-enter public office,” Edwards said in a statement from him and his wife Donna. “After eight years in the Governor’s Office, and with two grandbabies at home, we’re committed to being the best Papa and Nonna we can be.”
The former governor has been practicing law in New Orleans and Hammond.
Edwards added that he and his wife enjoyed “the honor of a lifetime” in their roles as governor and first lady.
“We accomplished so much to rebuild our state because – unlike Washington, DC – we worked with anyone, of any political party, to Put Louisiana First,” Edwards said. “As a country, the path we’re headed down is troubling, to say the very least. I hope that in next year’s election, the people of Louisiana will reject the extremist politicians that have paralyzed progress in this nation. I’m going to do all I can as a private citizen to advance that cause as best I can.”
It's not clear yet which Democrat will step up, with qualifying scheduled to take place in mid-January.

Probably hanging out at the Golden Corral off Millerville.

And after 8 years of him in the gov mansion- Louisiana was still in the bottom 4 of every category.
U.S. News & World Report's 2024 Best States report shows Louisiana ranks 50th for second year in a row. Texas ranks 29th overall, and Arkansas 47th.

Translation - I am making an absolute killing as a lobbyist with none of the pressure of public office.

He’ll definitely run but it’ll be a half-hearted effort. He’s just looking for campaign money.

Well if that happens, it means Landry lost re-election in 2027, and whomever beat him already bolted for another job...or was recalled and removed.

So unless he’s eyeing 2028 this has got to be it for him.

Or he just knows Louisiana isn't going to send a Democrat to Congress

Or he’s running for Governor again

This is legitimately shocking to me. JBE would practically walk in unopposed. He must be saving up a war chest to run for governor.

Senate is a national election. No republican (or very few) want to give the dems another seat in the US Congress especially when it is so close.
Governor is a different deal.
