Better than Iceland’s $800 aurora chaos: Alaska’s glass igloos deliver 240+ northern light

spent three months researching Iceland’s $800-per-night aurora hotels before stumbling across Alaska’s glass igloos on a photography forum. A Fairbanks local mentioned Borealis Basecamp almost dismissively—”better aurora stats, half the price, no crowds”—and I assumed it was typical internet exaggeration. Then I checked the data: 240 clear nights annually versus Iceland’s 120, interior continental climate versus coastal fog, and $350 nightly rates versus Reykjavik’s $600-plus chaos. I booked four nights for February 2026 that afternoon.

Hanging out with people like Roger vs hot Icelandic chicks. I’d pay the extra money.

Yeah, Fairbanks has a lot less precipitation than Iceland or Scandinavia and much fairer skies..

Another location nearby would be Chena Hot Springs. Been many years since Ive been there but they have a lot of winter activities and excellent aurora views.

Did you have any polar bears swim behind the main boat? My mom reported that the captain had never seen a bear follow them in the water like that, and she suspects it was the bacon being cooked with open galley portholes.

The Northern Lights are the single most awe inspiring thing I've ever seen in my life.

We had an event about a week ago that lasted almost all night. Red, white and green auroras.

Good stuff! We huffed it all the way to Tromso, Norway. Mrs. H2O was six months pregnant.

Went to Norh Pole Alaska two years ago, stayed at Pleasant Acres. We stayed in the igloos but my favorite part was drinking coffee while watching the caribou, He has them fenced in so you can watch them whenever you would like. We stayed there instead of the Borealis base camp because we had so many activities planned: snow mobiles, dog sledding and drove to the Castner ice cave. We did the Northern light viewing at Chena Hot Springs, they bring you to the top of the mountain in a snow cats for an unbelievable viewing of the Northern Lights. They also have a yurt up there for heat and serving hot chocolate. Fairbanks has some great restaurants, 15 min drive from there and about the same to Chena Hot Springs.
