Robert Smith RB for the Vikings had his best season ever in his final year. In his 8th and final season in 2000 he had a career high 1,521 yards and 7 TDs. Made second team All-Pro. Retired after the 2000 season.

Elway and manning both won super bowls. That's a nice way to hang it up, at the top

Sean Taylor

Sandy Koufax may be correct answer here.
27-9 record
317 strikeouts
1.73 ERA
Unanimous Cy Young
Pitching triple crown
#2 in MVP race

Other candidates
Billy Wagner: 1.43 ERA, 37 saves
Jim Brown: 1544 rushing yards, 17 TDs, 4 REC TDs, League MVP
Roger Staubach: 3586 yards, 27 TDs (both career highs)
Will Clark: .319 BA, 21 home runs, career high OPS in final year

Ted Williams hit .316 with 29 home runs at age 40.

I don't think that really fits the OP. He is talking about best year of their career. In fact, .316 looks to be his second worst batting average of his career. It's super impressive but not for Ted Williams.

He was actually 42. The year before he hit .388 at 41. The absolute GOAT hitter.

ETA: Your point is valid though.

That was not anywhere close to his career year. He hit 90 points higher one year and that wasn’t one of his MVP seasons.

Flavia Pannetta won the US Open and then retired during her acceptance speech.

Ashleigh Barty won her third major and then retired two months later. I think she was only 26.

After wining his second straight gold medal in the decathlon, Ashton Eaton retired at the end of the season.

They did but those were two very different seasons.

Peyton was such a shell of himself he got benched for Brock Osweiler and has an argument for being the worst Super Bowl winning quarterback in history.

I'd also argue that 2023 Alabama was one of the most impressive seasons of Saban's coaching career. He dragged a team with 8-4 talent to an SEC championship and OT with Michigan in the semis.

It's almost like the universe gave him a make-up call for when he was otherworldly the year or two prior, but lost in the playoffs.

Great season for sure; one of the best last years but wouldn't consider it a career year for him so I took him off my list.

Andrew Luck. The captain put up career highs in completion percentage and QBR in his final season. And was only 1 short of his career high for TD passes.

Dearest mother would have been proud of such an exquisite performance in his final battle before being honorably discharged.
