US Airports Experience Delays Due To Staffing Issues Caused By Shutdown: Duffy

Major U.S. airports reported widespread delays Monday as the federal shutdown strained an already short-staffed air-traffic system, prompting fresh warnings from industry and labor leaders that the impasse could ripple across the peak travel season."
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said air-traffic control towers were contending with mounting absenteeism since the shutdown began Oct. 1, forcing the Federal Aviation Administration to slow operations at times to maintain safety. While roughly 13,000 controllers are classified as essential and continue working, there is no assurance they will be paid on time, he said. About 50,000 Transportation Security Administration officers are also required to report to work; their next paycheck is due Oct. 14.
According to Duffy, he's been receiving reports of varying levels of absenteeism across the country, which rely on air traffic controllers from the Fededral Aviation Administration (FAA). He said that the department was tracking the staff shortages, which are being reported in "one area in one day, another area another day."

Hard to convince them "hey bro, just keep working even though you're not getting paid yet". So it's not really abandonment but they all know they will get paid when the shutdown is over.
If I were Duffy, I'd can every last one of the no-shows.

I bet that most of the no-shows are dems being dems.

1) Privatize TSA.. they suck
2) Don’t pay Congress salaries during shutdowns and pay military and ATC instead

Pretty sweet gig to call off of your shift knowing damn well you'll get paid in full whenever the government reopens. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out the political views of those that are calling off and why.
We've already mass canned controllers once, no reason we can't eventually do it again.

Cool I'll just explain to my creditors that they may not get any payments from me because I may not be getting a paycheck for three months.
Could you go months on end without getting a paycheck?

If you are essential and must continue working, then they really need to have some essential payroll people as well to make sure they get paid on time. There's no excuse for that.

It's been 7 days. The longest in history has been 35 days followed by 21 days.

Don’t organizations like USAA have mechanisms in place to have interest free loans to government employees in such a predicament?
This whole discussion came up pre shutdown.

Yes. Most people keep six months to a year of runway in case of the unexpected.

Are you still going to work or are you calling out with a fake illness?

Flying is not essential, it’s a luxury. We don’t NEED flight, we need food and shelter and water.

Flying needs to be more expensive

Plot Twist: America comes to the realization that TSA doesn't make anyone safer than on Sept. 10, 2001.

I want a Day 61 bloodbath of all of these extraneous federal jobs that had no business being a thing in the first place.

So, I flew out of MCO on Thursday and asked the TSA guy about the shutdown - he said no worries - the banks all have programs in place where you get paid and then they just get paid back when the government reopens.
Seems weird you don't know about it?
