Jane Goodall, the intellectual, soft-spoken conservationist renowned for her groundbreaking, immersive chimpanzee field research in which she documented the primates’ distinct personalities and use of tools, has died. She was 91.
The environmental advocate became a beloved household name who transcended generations through her appearances in documentaries and on television, as well as her travels to address packed auditoriums around the world.
The Jane Goodall Institute announced the primatologist’s death Wednesday in an Instagram post. According to the Washington, D.C.-based institute, Goodall died of natural causes while in California on a U.S. speaking tour.
Her discoveries “revolutionized science, and she was a tireless advocate for the protection and restoration of our natural world,” it said.
While living among chimpanzees in Africa decades ago, Goodall documented them doing activities previously believed to be exclusive to humans. Her observations and subsequent magazine and documentary appearances in the 1960s transformed how the world perceived not only humans’ closest living biological relatives but also the emotional and social complexity of all animals, while propelling her into the public consciousness.

I used to love her documentaries which aired on Discovery and Nat Geo. It was fascinating to watch her living in the chimp environment, covering generations, and how at ease they were with her sitting close by.

She’s the type of environmentalist that I grew up admiring for her dedication, knowledge base and commitment to a causes that have some common ground. She was kooky but that was her authentic nature in trying to protect things that we can’t lose as we manage our existence within the boundaries of earth. She wasn’t perfect and I can’t say I agreed with her complete message at times but I know that we are better off with her life’s work.

Saw a good post explaining she wasn't a scientist at all. She was an activist posing as a scientist. She did almost no legitimate scientific research or studies or papers. most of her career she just did photo ops and publicity stunts.
She was more like The Crocodile Hunter, nobody really called him a scientist.

What the frick would you call what she was doing living among chimpanzees?
Activists don't do shite like that. Look at Greta Thunberg. She's an activist.
Instead of going to Gaza and live for a few years, she lives a life of privilege with the occasional jaunt on her selfie yacht flotilla.

I feel like I got a PM for using that meme one time.

The meme has made her more immortal

She started out as a scientist The first 10 or 15 years of her career was more science. In the late '70s she pretty much transitioned into being more of an activist and TV character than doing any science that was 50 years ago.

You gotta appreciate the consistent and not so subtle racism on this page.

She probably died from fatigue.
