Either keeping all or most of the original members. Or even adding new members

But changing the name of the Band

And which one do you like better?

My first thoughts are

Joy Division < New Order

Mother Love Bone < Pearl Jam

ETA: I’ll make it a little easier. The original member either died or just left.

By no means was he a good musician, but I'd have to include Stuart Sutcliffe. They (The Beatles) were just getting formed when he was a member, but him quiting forced Paul to take over the bass playing.

Not to mention they became a much MUCH better group via addition by subtraction.

I guess you could include Pete Best as well. Terrible drummer. Once Ringo got in, they were on fire.

excellent choice. I didn’t realize they formed after Rage broke up. I always thought it was just a supergroup with Chris Cornell

I’ll add
Bauhaus < Love and Rockets

genesis is probably the poster child for a band member leaving and the band continuing on to fame & fortune. Whether you think they were better without Peter Gabriel is a matter of taste

Al Kooper and Blood, Sweat & Tears is another one

But AS was considered a supergroup since Cornell fronted them... Doesn't count IMO

And Rage Against is still a thing, not like they disappeared. Zach still fronts them when they do actually play.

Literally meets the exact definition of what the OP asked.

Audioslave is just Rage with Chris Cornell as the lead singer.

What does that even mean?

From OP: Best Bands that Formed after a Member passed away from the Original Band (or left the band)

How does Audioslave not fit this criteria?

From a band member perspective, they were. Exactly.

Velvet Revolver had members of 3 different bands, so not the same.

From a musical perspective you are correct. But that’s not what the OP was asking.

The OP changed the description to include “left the band”

Ok let me clear this up.
After a little research. I discovered that singer Zack de la Rocha of Rage left the band in 2000. Audioslave was formed in 2001 without Zack but included guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford, and drummer Brad Wilk from Rage and then they added Chris Cornell.
So while making one of my favorite Supergroups. They also apply to this thread. IMO
BOOM! The End
