A judge has sentenced Tyrell Morris, New Orleans' former 911 head, to one year in prison after he was convicted last week on multiple charges, including malfeasance in office, insurance fraud, injuring public records, and impersonating a peace officer.
Morris appeared in court for his sentencing hearing Wednesday in an orange jumpsuit and shackles. As the hearing got underway, the prosecution asked to play recordings of Morris' jail phone calls, in which he's heard calling the judge an expletive. Assistant District Attorney Corey Tassin said the calls demonstrate that Morris "does not in fact have any remorse or respect for this court."
The calls were played in open court before Judge Simone Levine handed down her sentence. Morris broke down in tears and apologized as he learned his fate, and appealed for no jail time.
"Mr. Morris, you think you are exceptional. You are not exceptional," Levine said.
Morris has been in custody since he was convicted last week on multiple charges, including malfeasance in office, insurance fraud, injuring public records, and impersonating a peace officer.
According to prosecutors, Morris had attempted to cover up his involvement in a 2023 crash involving a city-owned vehicle. He reportedly changed city policy, lied to police, and falsely presented himself as a peace officer to avoid consequences.

The felony gives him more credibility in his next mayorial race.
(Yes, he was running for mayor. DQ'd for not filing his taxes)

An Orleans Parish judge sentenced former New Orleans 911 director Tyrell Morris to a year in jail and 1,000 hours of community service after his conviction last week on four felony counts for trying to cover up a 2023 crash in his public vehicle. Criminal District Judge Simone Levine handed down the sentence after Morris pleaded for his freedom, trembling in shackles and orange jail scrubs while apologizing to the judge for calling her a "b**ch" in a jail phone call after she'd ordered him detained last week.

Got off way too easy. Judge is a clown for giving him a light sentence after making fun of her.

Below is from his campaign page, among other gross exaggerations and likely outright lies. I wonder what his salary as 911 director was.
"At just 16, Tyrell was named Deputy Vice-Chairman of Disaster Operations at the American Red Cross National Capital Chapter after leading a critical response during the 2001 terrorist attack on the Pentagon, an anthrax attack that cripled the nation’s capital and the DC Sniper attack in 2002."

Money & a little power can corrupt people with no / low morals & integrity.
He allegedly hid and/or altered documents, contracts from the 911 Board.
The contract was around $6M for a new Computer Aided Dispatch program, of which $3M was wasted.
It would appear that his 911 Board did not have a good system of checks & balances, and gave him too much leeway or authorization to make decisions.

Add up the money racket that was going on behind the scenes & the backend damages to families and companies that This POS was running thru one of the most trusted single forms of security for the general public.
For many years, try to call 911 in New Orleans, it’s a joke!
And then this guy was sheltering a crime ring from being caught is the way I see it.
He should be doing 20, no less!

The fact that it's still up is hilarious. I love the "endorsements."

these types get into politics for the money. Not the salary. They get into politics to enrich themselves and steal at the first chance they get. it’s innate to them. The older brothas school them on the graft, so they think nothing of stealing. i like to say..:
two things they can’t be trusted with are power and money. they’ll abuse the first, and steal the second.
