2-1/2 days in Oregon/Washington

Flying into Portland. Starting off with Colombia River Gorge and Mt Hood. Debating whether to go south from there and see Smith Rock Park/Crater Lake and then the next day head to the coast and see the Dunes national park and drive north to Cannon Beach.
Other option would be to head north from Mt Hood to see Mt St Helen’s and Mt Rainier and then head to Astoria/Cannon Beach.
Would love some educated opinions

Seems like a lot of driving for 2 1/2 days.
We did Olympic last year and this year we did Mt Hood for 5 days, then stayed in Portland for 2 nights and headed to Cannon Beach for the full day in between.

If going up there, a day trip to Victoria, Canada, is a good one. We took a sea plane from Seattle to Victoria.

I agree, we took 2+ weeks this past summer doing the Columbia River Gorge and Olympic Peninsula. Daughter is in college out there so have done Canon Beach, Astoria separately.
You could spend the whole 2 1/2 days at any of the locations in Oregon or Washington. I would just focus on one.
If you want to split them, do Mt. Hood 1 day and stay in Hood River. Then go to Canon Beach or Astoria for the second day.

no wrong answers with either option

I love Crater Lake and the Oregon coast, but I'd drive up to Mt. Rainier. You can see Mt. St. Helen's along the way. Check out the area around Paradise at Rainier and Astoria/Cannon beach. Thats probably tight in your timeline, but of your options the best bang for the buck covering all your bases.

Thinking about it, this is actually less driving than Mt Hood and Canon Beach because you miss Portland traffic by staying to the North.
Rainier, with Mt St Helens if you want, then Astoria should be the least driving and a good, but fast trip. Canon Beach is only 45 minutes past Astoria.

Columbia River Gorge
This summer at Mt Hood we drove about an hour to the White Salmon River for rafting and got to do a Class V w/ a 12' waterfall. It was amazing.

Head to Newburg and visit some wineries.

If you make the Oregon coast, make a stop at Ecola State Park near Cannon Beach.

Just went to Astoria with a friend who grew up there and this is where he took us instead of Cannon Beach. Absolutely beautiful.
It doesn't have the photogenic rock formations, but South Jetty beach right outside of Astoria was great for a secluded walk on a huge beach with not many people around.
Also just a heads up that there are a lot of closures at Mount St. Helens currently.

I have family in Oregon and Washington. Was just there in May. Went to Lake Quinault for a week, drove up through the Olympic National Park, visiting the Ho Rain Forrest, then caught the ferry to Whidbey Island for another week. Really nice. That whole part of Washington is a "Must See". Check out Lake Crescent Lodge!
So much to see and do it's impossible to choose. You have to decide "North or South". Maybe I'd go "South" if I had to choose.
Maybe start your journey at the Columbia River Gorge and Mt. Hood before proceeding to Bend for an overnight stay. This itinerary allows ample time to appreciate Smith Rock State Park and the distinctive high-desert scenery without urgency. From Bend, travel south to Crater Lake National Park, where clear skies offer some of the most renowned vistas in the Northwest; however, note that October weather may lead to snowfall and possible partial road closures. Following your visit to Crater Lake, head west to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area near Florence for a striking contrast with its extensive sand dunes and coastal forests. Continue north on Highway 101 along the coast, passing through Yachats, Newport, and Tillamook, culminating at Cannon Beach and Ecola State Park. While this route is longer than the northern alternative, it encompasses a remarkable breadth of landscapes—including mountains, desert, a volcanic lake, dunes, and rugged coastline—within a single journey.
We stayed at the Sun River Resort a couple of years ago as a base for a week and toured Bend, day trip to Crater Lake etc. Really liked that.
Note: Given it’s October and Crater Lake can be hit-or-miss with weather, the north loop is the safer bet for maximizing your time. But if you’re willing to gamble on conditions, the south loop gives you the “grand tour” of Oregon’s landscapes.

If I remember correctly, there is a cool lighthouse right here as well

Don’t stay in Portland at all. It is like the memes. 25 year old strung out white people with nasty hair sleeping and shitting all over the place. We felt very unsafe the one night we stayed downtown. Even the Apple Store had a Jurassic Park size fence around the building.
