Taking a trip to Indianapolis over fall break and looking for recommendations for the city itself, as well as recommendations for things to do/see along the way.
Our plan is to leave early on Saturday (3 AM, or so) and make the drive to Indianapolis. We’re planning to stay there for three nights and in Bowling Green for one night on our way home.
Our only “must-do” is the kids museum in Indianapolis (the reason for our trip). Outside of that we are wide open.
Mammoth Cave outside Bowling Green looks really cool. Touring the Indianapolis Speedway and the Louisville Slugger museum also seem really neat - anyone ever done either?
We’ve gotten reservation's at St. Elmo’s. Would love any Italian recommendations. Would also love any recommendations for things to do with kids - any parks that we should go too?

Drove between Indianapolis and Louisville earlier this year.
Here's a couple very random stops I did.
The Brick (Burger and beer)
10 Pin (small ball bowling)
450 North Brewing is certainly different
Edinburgh Diner is supposed to be good too but I didn't make that one.
They have a K1 go kart track outside Indianapolis.

Did this a couple of years ago with my college-age daughter (her request). She and I enjoyed it; it's in a neat old building location in downtown Louisville. Takes about an hour for the tour.
I can't see kids enjoying, they will likely get bored, and just start asking, "When do I get my free little mini-bat? and "Daddy, I want you to buy THAT bat for me!" at the gift shop after the tour.

Haha I can see my kids being that way, but if it’s just an hour… I think it’d be neat, would a non baseball person like it (my wife)?

Awesome - we’ll probably check it out then! Neither of us are racing fans though, does that matter?

Definitely worth doing. Not sure a non-baseball fan would enjoy.

If you have kids I think the Indy Zoo is pretty good, but it's been decades since I went. No idea now. If you are looking for a hotel the Crown Plaza downtown has a bunch of old train cars as a rooms, kind of entertaining for little kids.
On the way up/back check out Schimpf's Confectionary candy shop in suburban Louisville and/or have a meal at the Red Yeti next door. They make their own candy and kids can watch.

Awesome - thank you recommendations. We’ve already booked our hotel, but we’ll definately look into the zoo.
Would a tour of the Kentucky derby grounds be worth it? Our kids would love the candy display, so we’ll definitely stop in.

Indy Speedway tour and museum are great. Check to see if the museum is open - they were doing a really extensive renovation recently and I don't remember the target completion date.
NCAA Hall of Champions in Indy is nice as well. It is in the same area as the zoo (White River Park).
When I was there in the late 90s Mammoth Cave had multiple tour options from short to a couple of hours. Not sure if that's still the case.
Kentucky Derby Museum and CD tour is cool
Corvette Museum is awesome for gear heads. Also amazing how they restored cars that fell into a sinkhole.
The GM Bowling Green plant used to have tours as well; not sure if they still do. At the end of the tour one person from the group was selected to crank a Vette that had just come off the line.

My husband is a fan and I k ew nothing about it. The cars in the museum are cool though. Kids were certainly geeked when we were there. The outside of the children's museum looks super cool and we want to return with the grandchildren.

See if they have any races . We went to Churchill downs for a weekday race.. it was awesome.
Bet like $10 on every race. It was $2 beer day as well… worked out great

We did the bourbon trail last fall and stayed in Louisville. My wife got us a golf cart tour of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. We rode up on a Saturday morning and it was awesome. If you have the time I’d highly suggest it.

Never been inside the grounds. It's in the hood, keep your head on a swivel.
Also downtown Indy very center has a large fountain and is very walkable, you might consider taking an hour walk and just kicking around.

We enjoyed our tour of Churchill downs. They have a cool surround video at the beginning. Definitely cool to see all the history that’s been made there.
