Lincoln Riley and USC Football

Illinois’ offense basically did whatever they wanted this past Saturday in Champaign. Had they not fumbled going into the end zone in 4Q, Illinois wins the game comfortably instead of the walkoff Fg.
SC still looks to be a ways away from elite and nowhere close to Ohio State or Oregon.
LR is a top 10 paid coach in cfb but is not producing a top 10 program. Seems they are currently paying a huge sum of money to be an also ran in the B1G. What is the future of this program?

The future of the program is much like LSUs currently. Way too much money invested into the HC to even consider making a change at the top before the next 2-3 seasons play out.
Gotta strap in and hope he figures it out.
With NIL and schools now able to pay players, I think we will see a shift in the next 3-4 years to the NFL head coaching model of churn in burn. Short term contracts, you get 2-3 seasons, and then it’s on to the next coach. There will be a few of the Andy Reid, Harbaugh, and Tomlin types, but they will be the exception and not the norm.

He should've stayed at Oklahoma.

Lincoln Riley is a known commodity. You’re going to get a dazzling but finesse offense and a garbage defense. His teams aren’t tough and have 0 physicality so there will always be a ceiling, especially in the Big 10 where people punch you in the mouth and every game is an ugly knock down drag out affair.
quote:I doubt USC admin really cares about the football team besides the fat Big 10 check, so they are fine with Riley as long as he goes 6-6 to 9-3 range and gets people going to games.
What is the future of this program?

I think he still has a worse record than Clay Helton.

...who is likely to be fired soon at Georgia Southern.

USC deserves all of their football misery and being stuck with Riley for what they did to the PAC-12

Yep. It's why he left OU when they were heading to the SEC. His brand of football is suited for the Big 12 or the old Pac 12. I think USC could actually do well in the Big 10 if they get the right coach but I personally don't think Riley is that guy.

100%. You knew they were in trouble when they started the conference schedule in the Big House last year and lost as big favorites to a totally one dimensional Michigan team.

I’m not too plugged into the West coast scene but it does seem like no one really cares about SC football anymore which is crazy. One thing about Pete Carroll is that he was really able to sort of capture the scene and make SC football culturally relevant in LA. There is so much going on there that it seems college football isn’t automatically relevant the way it is in the South or even in Midwestern states with pro sports.

It's crazy to think we tried hiring this guy...and still would be having the same conversation we're having now about our head coach.

He had to actually beg fans to come out for their Michigan State game. Then a week later complained about the game times.

Tattoo making another gem on him complaining about game times lol

Riley’s not the problem. Go to school in Los Angeles, to play football in the midwest is the problem. As wonderful as living in LA can be, I think ¾ elite athletes will prefer Ohio State in these circumstances.

They’re so irrelevant in the west coast to me
I forget they’re out there
Their games have no consequence and they are so bland and generic

Boosters having their names on coaching positions is the weirdest fricking thing

Oklahoma State should reach out, he's a small town boy, play the I miss the quiet life. He can dominate the Big 12 and win a playoff game or two every few years. I'd take him at Baylor if Aranda goes. I think Kingsbury could end up at USC or UCLA eventually.

Probably hover around where they are now between 6-6 and 9-3. Second or third tier of the B1G.
USC is currently closing a $150M budget deficit and laying off tons of staff. Not possible to fire Riley. Would cost $100M between the buyout and hiring a new staff.
They are stuck in the mud with the same results for the foreseable future.

That makes some good sense.
