They found his PFD in the back of his kayak floating. Was fishing a collegiate tournament and the bassmaster kayak series is supposedly on TB this weekend.

I know people love to kayak and to each his own, but there is no way I'd get in one on Toledo.

Why is that? Just curious.

I don’t know how deep Toledo is, but I’ve been out on Lake P in gnarly weather, and the shallow lake depth contributes mightily to wave size when the winds pick up. RIP.

Toledo Bend gets super nasty real quick in bad weather. I mean like sink your 22' bass boat nasty. If this poor kid was paddling around and got caught in a thunderstorm, its easy to understand how it turned to shite on him quick. No less tragic, but easy to grasp.

Lake Decade has sunk a few boats in rough weather and puckered many assholes of boaters trying to get back to Falgout canal in storms. Ask me how I know.

I've heard the trout aren't there any more. Is that true?
20 years ago, we'd just drift that lake and load the ice chest in a few hours.

The Bend doesn't play if the wind gets up.

I've been scared shitless in a 20ft Skeeter out there.

So he had a PFD and wasn't wearing it?

Looking at the photos in the article, it looks like he never wore it. Not sure if I would be on a kayak like that on Toledo and not at least an auto inflator

Eh I have no clue what happened here but I think you guys are vastly over estimating the worry here. For one, in terrible conditions you can kayak to shore and just hold up. Not ideal, but possible. Easier to do that then in a boat especially say on a rocky shore.

Most guys kayaking aren’t going that far from the launch, 2-3 miles at most. If the weather doesn’t look great you inch closer to the launch as you go. The kayak I’m assuming was found floating? If you can swim, you fall off the kayak and grab the kayak.

I’ve fishing the Gulf of America launching from the beach and that’s much more dangerous than a lake.

If this guy was experienced it had to be a terrible fluke accident.

yep. no trout at all. No sir. None. Everybody should go fish Hopedale cause there are no trout in Lake Decade.

people still catch trout there in the winter/fall. Just maybe not on a weekend when a couple hundred boats are out all trying to drift fish the same area.

I'm agreeing here.

Kayaks can take some brutal rough water and still be pretty stable. Even the big sit on top fishing ones.

What's the chances he was hit by a boater that just kept on trucking? Bass boat hauling arse back to the launch in bad weather, kayak tucked around a bend.

Unless he has some sort of medical condition, it would be pretty difficult to fall out of a kayak, and not be able to get back to the kayak or to the shore.

From what I understand he was very experienced. His PFD was the light weight one with the CO2 inflatable cartridge if it gets submerged. He had drowned and then eventually popped back to the surface. My guess is maybe he had a seizure or was running fast and hit a submerged stump and fell out striking his head.

Hell, last time I was down in the Delacroix area fishing with my brother-in-law I saw a bunch of gators 8-10 ft. long almost everywhere we stopped to fish.

I know there's people who kayak fish in those areas and it seems a hell of a risk to take.

Are there any gators in Toledo Bend????

The guy was in a kayak, not a motorboat.

They don't mess with you at all. I've seen several 11+ footers in point la hache before and they don't let you get close to them.

I did a 6 month job in Jug Lake in 2012. Puckered a few times.
