Saw a podcast last week where Steven Rinella was speaking about CWD and folks who believe it's a scam.

"The only folks I want to hear from are those who would let me take a CWD positive deer, process the meat, make a burger out of it, grill it and see them eat it.......knowing it was CWD positive."

Who would take his challenge?

I’d eat it, assuming I got something more than a shitty burger out of the deal. I’ve seen his cooking shows.

Im not in the it’s a scam camp, but if you think about it hard enough, we’re all taking this risk any time we eat a deer that hasn’t been tested. To my knowledge there’s never been a link established between CJD and CWD in the 60ish years it’s been around.

I dont think its a scam. There is a good chance ive eaten deer with it before based on the areas I hunt. I dont think id knowingly eat one that was positive. CJD is a pretty damn terrifying disease.

I'm in this camp. I don't really think about it much, but I wouldn't intentionally eat a CWD positive deer.

With as widespread as CWD is and as small of a percentage of harvested deer that actually get tested, I’d say tens of thousands of hunters have unknowingly eaten meat from a deer with CWD. The odds are never zero, but with no recorded transmission to humans, I’d say you’re pretty safe.

I won’t intentionally eat meat if I knew the deer had tested positive, but I’m not going to suddenly start bringing every deer to get tested when CWD shows up in south LA. Ignorance is bliss I guess

They’ve talked about that bet over the years. I’d probably not do it. I’d also say that’s it’s a good bet some deer have been eaten over the last 20-30 years that were positive.

I’d be interested if it crosses over to humans though there are no cases so far.

I think those guys did a bit more doom and gloom than needed.

If you get your deer processed at a facility, you’ve probably already had a nibble of it.

Doubt Steve would eat it, I've heard him talk about getting Trichinosis from bear meat.

This is where I am with it. No way id intentionally feed it to my family. If nothing else, my wife finding out I fed the kids a deer that I knew was infected with a severe neurological disease would be the end of my kids eating any wild game.

Not worth it. I'd throw a whole elk away just to avoid that happening.

There has not been a single case of CWD transfer to humans. In deer it is confined to the spinal cord and brain. The other meat is perfectly fine to eat and obviously has been eaten by hundreds if not thousands of hunters unknowing their untested deer was infected. However a deer in its last stages would be very emaciated and as a compromised animal could possibly suffer contamination of a different nature and probably be unappetizing.

Are you saying that you accept Steve’s challenge?

ChefJPB is a member here, what if the terms were revised and he cooked you the burger? I’m sure they can make it happen.

Loup you have no idea how terrifying it is until someone you know has it.
Typically confirmation can only be made after death and a brain autopsy done.

Depends on the overall condition of the deer in question but most probably yes

Not looking to eat meat from any diseased animal, but there’s been plenty consumed in Colorado and Wyoming that were infected.
