Up 10 spots to 169 gotta start the climb back up somwhere
The article lists bama as higher but that’s false.
Here’s the SEC

LSU tied for No. 169 in the U.S. News & World Report 2026 college rankings. That’s 10 spots above where the university fell on last year’s list, when it ranked No. 179. Here’s where other Louisiana universities fell on this year’s list: Tulane was the state’s highest-ranking university at No. 69. Loyola ranked No. 222. Louisiana Tech ranked No. 318. UL Monroe ranked No. 358. UL Lafayette ranked No. 373. Southern University and the University of New Orleans both ranked between numbers 395 and 434.

There isn’t a damn bit of difference outside of individual degree programs between anyone after A&M from a degree prestige standpoint.
The average hiring manager outside the south sees them all the same.

This list must be ranked on diversity

agree overall but it’s always interesting and if you are consistently sliding down the rankings then you have to wonder about the school’s leadership

For Bama it was like 18-20k or so in enrollment when I was there.
Now its 42k.
So they've imported every kid from blue states that couldn't get into their instate school by giving their mom the chance to brag their child is on a "Kohl's 40% off everything!" scholarship that they revoke as soon as Johnny gets a C during fall rush semester and laugh while increasing out of state tuition to $45k a year (incl room, board and all expenses).
There are college condos in Tuscaloosa now sitting at $1M with no view or easy access to the bars because they tapped into the coastal trust fund market for these out of state kids.
Modern education in America is an absolute joke.

Why is there such a big difference between A&M and the rest?

Seems like LSU has gotten in on this game also.
The academics finally became capitalists and decided that charging out of state tuition could make them a lot more money and there’s 100% guaranteed student loans. No downside for them.

Tons of money

I knew about UT
I suppose I didn’t realize A&M had that much as well

Yeah tamu is top 10 in largest university endowments and the number 2 public university in endowment size.
Number 1 is UT.
One could argue with the local student base to choose from and size of their endowment they severely underachieve in their scholastic rankings. Arguably more underachieving scholastically than athletically.

Right. A huge chunk of the rankings is research dollars and publication rate. This doesn’t always equate to a good undergraduate program.

University of Texas system receives 2/3 of the revenue generated from the University Lands entity, and Texas A&M system receives 1/3.
The Texas State system gets jack shite.

I recall LSU being in the 120s at some point this century.
It seems Bama has had a drop, correct?

Around 2008-09 with okeefe I believe hit a high water mark around 120-125 ish
Been a consistent fall since under F King. Hopefully this is the start of a turn around. 120s consistently should be an achievable goal

IDK about LSU, but bama dropped when USNWR implemented measures to keep universities from gaming the rankings. They're probably only a little above where they rightfully belong now.

My cousin's kid's sorority pledge class had a lot of girls from out of state. Mostly Texas, but a substantial number from the Northeast.
In my pledge class we thought we were cosmopolitan because there was a guy from Cincinnatti.

I think USNWR is reasonable in the aggregate, but the shifts year to year are silly for people using them to assess public/professional reception. Granted, that's not really what the USNWR methodology is set up to do, but that's how people treat it.
Nobody looks at a UF degree as more valuable or meaningful than a GT degree, and I'm not disrespecting UF at all. There is too much movement (FSU is not on par with A&M and Wake Forest despite its surge and Florida's growth generally). Nobody in real life will treat an FIU or South Florida degree as better than Missouri or Auburn.

That’s doctored statistics if Ole Miss, Alabama & LS&U are all “tied” for #169.
