I am considering a two-week trip next May with my wife to drive the Adriatic coast from northern Italy down through Croatia, Montenegro, etc. all the way to northern Greece. I would like to stop for a day or two at a number of towns along the route, though, I do not have specific stops mapped out yet. Has anyone driven that route and would you advise it? Thanks.

Drove from Dubrovnik to Perast, albeit a short trip it was super easy. Some rental agencies won't let you take the car out of the country (or the E.U.), so check into that when booking. If you plan the stops and lodging I don't think you will have any issues. Border crossing into Montenegro (the only non-E.U. country you'll hit) was slow, and the guy didn't speak great English but google translate worked fine. I'd recommend that crossing early before traffic gets bad.

Beautiful part of the country, that trip sounds like a blast.

I've only done a small portion of that...Zagreb to Zadar and down the coast to Dubrovnik. I wished we would have had time to include Montenegro also but didn't. It was an incredible trip however.

Link to my TD trip review here if you hadn't seen it yet:

Yes. Ljubljana to Trieste to Pula and then mostly along to coast to Kotor. Not to Greece. Driving in Albania might be a challenge?

Where to visit? Everywhere! Istria, Split & the Islands (Hvar), Trogir, Zadar, Dubrovnik, Kotor. Not on the coast, Plitvicka National Park.

The rental car will be extremely expensive to do a one way. So check that out first.

Outside of that I’d do it in a heart beat, extremely adventurous

That may not necessarily be the case. We rented from SIXT, pickup in Zagreb and drop-off in Dubrovnik and there was no extra charge for the one way rental. This was in 2018, 17 day rental.

Did Dubrovnik > Perast > Kotor > Mostar > Dubrovnik 2 years ago and really enjoyed it. I believe the traffic can get horrible in the summer months, especially at the borders. We went in April - had amazing weather and little crowd. Easy, beautiful drives.

2 years ago I drove from Split to Plitvice to Slovenia (all over) to Venice. One day trip drive from Dubrovnik to Mostar. Very easy drive. However, if traveling south bound, I’d ditch the car in Split and use the ferry system to points south. Not sure about the Greece connection though. It is super easy to use the ferries, cabs are cheap, and the islands along the way (Hvar, Korchula) are incredible. You have to reserve spots on the car ferries or show up really early on non-reservation trips if you have a vehicle and this can be somewhat restrictive. When in coastal Croatia, there are even cheap boat taxis to take you to smaller islands or beaches nearby. We did this in Split, Hvar, and Dubrovnik. Having a car is good if you want to travel inland some but if in parts where it is compressed to the coast, a car would just be a hassle.

Last year 2 friends and I went in late April from Bavaria to Macedonia. Our route was Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, and Macedonia. We didn't encounter anything really unpleasant, roads and navigation were easy. But be prepared - especially in Albania - for lots and lots of hairpin curves in the mountains, and narrow roads where one vehicle has to allow the other to pass. On one of those occasions we saw a car with New Jersey plates. They had to stop and let us pass, and I asked the guy about it. He (Albanian who had lived in Jersey) said, "We're in Albania, nobody will say anything. (if you give the cop a couple of bucks to look the other way)"

It's a beautiful drive, met lots of friendly people. We spent most of our time in Albania, which is extremely interesting, with lots of natural beauty, rich - and weird - history, and is in a way, along with Bosnia and Kosovo, the wild west of Europe. We want to go back and spend more time there.

I'd recommend it, just be aware, like anywhere these days.
