Best way to get rid of yellow jacket/ground hornet nest in a flower bed

There's a flower bed at our church that must have a big nest in some gladiolas that are planted. I guess in the ground. Can't see any nests hanging from the leaves or anything. What's the best way to kill the nest without destroying the flower bed? i.e. we don't need to just dump a bunch of gas on it.

Saw where vegetable is poured in the hole gets them. Beware there is always a back door entry/exit as well.

we had one in the flower bed, but just outside of a windows, threw sevin dust on it, they gone. I could shine a light in the hole at night and they would attack the screen on the window.

Dawn dish soap mixed with water will kill them and really quickly.
Might try to dump a whole bottle and then follow with a water hose.

Most of the nests I have found have been in our shrubs. I always bought hornet spray with a tube and waited for dark to empty the can. If you can find foaming spray, use that. Have always had 100% elimination with no dead plants.

quote:Recently, I found a Yellow Jacket nest in the ground near my house. I put about a cup of Dawn Dish soap in about 2 gallons of water in a bucket and put that a few feet from the nest. I waited until about an hour after it got dark to make sure all of the Yellow Jackets had returned to the nest for the night. Then I snuck up on the nest with a window screen and a flashlight. I noticed a couple of Yellow Jackets sitting on the ground on the edge of the hole to their nest. I gently but quickly put the screen on top of the nest. Then I grabbed the bucket and quickly poured the water and dish soap into the hole. The solution filled the nest and was pouring outside onto the ground. Every Yellow Jacket was submerged in the solution. Within 5 to 10 seconds they are all dead, even the few that tried to crawl out. Once the solution covers their mouth, the viscosity of the solution makes it impossible for them to breathe. It only takes seconds for them to die. The larvae in their nest die super quick as well. There's no harmful gasoline or pesticides involved. The dish soap is biodegradable. Such an easy, safe inexpensive solution.

Insects dont breathe through the mouth. They dont have lungs. Instead they have small holes along their exoskeleton for respiration. The soap clogges up the holes called spiracles.

Good to know. Thanks for the correction. In any event, dawn dish soap and water suffocates them quickly. The nest I poured it on probably held a half gallon. I poured the whole 2 gallons on it. The solution was gushing well outside the hole. They didn't have a chance. The next morning I dug up the hole with a shovel to inspect the nest. It had a couple of hamburger patty sized honey combs. I filled the hole with dirt and covered it with leaves.

You do you. I’m pouring gasoline in the hole. The $5 worth of gas is money well spent. I get the same satisfaction foaming a hornets nest and watching them writhe in the agony of a slow death.

don't use gas if you have any trees/shrubs nearby. You chance killing it along with the yellowjackets. Ask me how I know............
