Saw this on reddit today. Kinda mind blowing how some poor people think.

The comments in the thread are even better

Seems like the disabled baw ran the numbers, and realized the government was going to pay him more than 300k in benefits over his expected lifespan.

I doubt the guy is even disabled. Ive noticed that a good chunk of people on disability shouldn't even be on it.

Might be a good case for a special needs trust.
quote:

A first-party special needs trust is a legal arrangement that holds assets belonging to a person with a disability, allowing them to maintain eligibility for government benefits like Medicaid or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) while still using their own money for supplemental expenses. The trust is funded with the individual's assets, such as from a personal injury settlement or inheritance, and must be established by the beneficiary, a parent, guardian, or court before the beneficiary turns 65. A crucial feature of a first-party trust is the "Medicaid payback provision," which requires the state Medicaid agency to be reimbursed for services it provided to the beneficiary after the beneficiary's death, before any remaining funds can be distributed to other beneficiaries.

Within less than a decade, he is ahead. Add the medical insurance and cost scam and he might make 5 years, if he is healthy.

Depends on how disabled. Like if buddy needs 15K a month, then yea, keep the benefits. If needs like 500-1K, take the inheritance and invest it.

It’s almost a guarantee he isn’t disabled. He has some accounting acumen. At the very least, he could work part time at H&R Block during tax season, but that would probably cut into his disability benefits also.

You see, this is the reason why so many conservative minded people want to completely burn the entitlement structure to the ground and start over. The fact that he’s debating this is insane.

Additionally, inheritances shouldn’t be taxed.

Google says that he could have thrown that $300k into a trust and keep the welfare benefits.

They aren’t unless your estate is worth 10s of millions of dollars and if it is, you have enough money to avoid the estate tax anyway through planning

There's no Louisiana inheritance tax. That's true for all but a handful of states. Federal inheritance tax doesn't kick in until around $13 million.

If I am disabled and I really can't enjoy the $300k and it would all go to bills. I would give it to someone else and have them just buy me a couple things
