Seeing lots of complaints about the play calling but after rewatching the Florida game I guess I am not seeing what you are seeing.

I saw a decent balance of run attempts vs pass attempts.

I saw lots of screen passes that are used like a run play to get people out in space away from the mess on the o-line.

I did see what seemed to be some wasted run plays to the middle of the line where the RB ran into a clogged up line.

I saw lots of different pass plays. Long, middle, short, screens, slants, etc. Lots of variety with passing.

It seems like we are spreading the ball out to our playmakers and targeting lots of different guys.

Not much use of tempo.

Nothing too creative or trick plays like we saw with Clemson.

Nuss with a 55.5% completion averaging 8.1yds.
6 different players caught passes.

What do people think Sloan should be calling up there?

Our oline isn't good at adjusting assignment in a play. They dont pass off to the next guy well. We have free defenders running into the box almost every run play unblocked. His play calling looks worse bc of it.

I agree with you. I think one thing that would help out Nuss and Durham and the OL would be more spacing with the WRs. Spread it out and force defenses to show you what they're doing. I think our sets are just a bit too tight and it's making it easy for defenses to disguise what they're doing and key in on runs.

Down and distance matters.

They're using jumbo run sets on 2nd and long over and over after not being able to run drive after drive, setting the offense up for 3rd and long.

I havent even started to look at what they are running from what sets but the competition is. I can promise, they likely only run single plays from certain sets, meaning when they line up the defense knows generally what is coming.

I know the RPO BS doesn't work when you're QB has a torso injury and can't run.

Pretty much every run is a single back to one side, occasionally in pistol. Most of the time the WRs are spread out but I wasnt really paying attention to that on the run plays. I dont remember seeing the jumbo run set a lot but that would be interesting to go back and look for.

I agree with the OP. I just rewatched the game and the play calling wasn't nearly as bad as it felt in the moment (not calling it great either). The one thing I've noticed through 3 games is that the pistol formation almost always turns out to be a run. I'm gonna look for this in the future as I'm hoping that Sloane is setting some stuff up for later in the season.

The jumbo run wasn't nearly as prominent in this game as it was against Clemson and La Tech. The only one that really stood out was the big run by Durham, but they were actually under center in the offset power I and it wasn't a zone schemed run. This is what I hope to see more in the future.

The O line did better in a zone scheme this week, but not great. We did have a few good runs called back because of a penalty (one was a Nuss scramble for a first in the red zone).

I agree, jumbo sets I guess I should say, they have an extra TE and they initially have the RB in the pistol then motion him to the side of Nuss and then run from it, normally in 2nd and long.

They ran a great run call against Clemson where they motion one guy, center the ball with another WR or TE, can't remember, to put 2 blockers in front of the RB, both already on the move.

It was within 5 plays of being 50/50. Id like more toss plays. We tend to block better when the OL gets moving off the line laterally.

Balance is talked about too much.

Calling an up the middle running play on 3rd and 9 is rarely a good call for a team averaging 2.4ypc.
Doesn't matter if you thre 8 out of the last 9 plays, you call the play that you think can move the chains.

This is the problem I see. Sloan seems to call plays he likes or has scripted, but it doesn't always appear that the situation on the field is or our effectiveness againt that deffence with those plays is taken into account.

To be fair. His play calling was really good in week 1. However, his playcalling was not good in Week 2 or 3. We have tendencies that make it easy to diagnose the play and we have had terrible route concepts in passing plays, from alignment, spacing, and synching together which makes it easier for DBs/defenses to cover.

Ignoring that is a disservice to the team. The offensive line has been an issue in the run game. Our pass protection while struggling on the right side mainly the right tackle the pass protection actually has not been as bad as everyone is stating.

You can take week 2 with a grain of salt.

BK looked like he was trying to harden the O line with the play calling. Three runs up the middle on 1st and goal was to test the O line… not Sloan coaching pee wee football.

Sloan knows more football than most here give him credit for. We sling it when the cuffs are off.

I thought at the beginning of the game we played way too much horizontal screen.

Once we started throwing quick slants vertically up the middle we started moving the ball.

I thought the 4th quarter was called very well. Some said we played to lose and that’s just pure nonsense. Last 3 possessions:

- threw a 65 yard slant to TE; ran Johnson, he fumbled, lost 20 yards, nuss throws INT

- with 5:00 left in game, we run in 1st & 2nd. We have a 3rd & one which is ideal here. Get a first down and burn 2 1/2.more min off the clock. We ran for no gain, but you run there 100% of the time.

- Durham runs down to 2 yard line. We mercy kneel 3 plays to end game.

Without the fumble, and subsequent INT, no one is bitching.

Now that we know Nuss is hurt his passing makes sense. We cannot run the ball and I think it has more to do with block scheme than the O-line ability

0 screens in drive one. 1 screen in drive two. 0 screens in drive three. 1 screen in drive four that A.Anderson dropped / thrown behind receiver. 1 screen in drive five to N.Anderson who had a great YAC and was in a tempo segment. 0 screens in drive six. 0 screens in drive 7. Then Halftime.
