2013 F150 4x4- transmission fluid leaking
Posted on 9/15/25 at 4:21 pm

When I went home for lunch today I noticed a puddle of fluid on the ground where I park. Couldn’t tell exactly what it was so I dabbed it with a paper towel and it was a light pink- so appears to be transmission fluid. The kicker is there is not fluid on the transfer case or transmission pan. I understand it will follow gravity, but I would think there would be some fluid in those areas if it were originating there. I haven’t noticed any difference in how the truck drives today. Anything else I can troubleshoot on leak points before taking to a mechanic?

Check your cooler and lines, would be my next place to look.
ETA: assuming you would’ve seen it from the bellhousing area when you checked the pan, but that’s a possible location too if not.

6R80 transmission? If so, did you replace the leadframe while under warranty/recall?
I did not, but experienced similar issues which lead to shifting issues, which lead to replacement of lead frame out of pocket.
Just do a www. search of ford 6r80 leadframe and get to reading.

Checked cooler and lines and the lines looked fine

If it’s not pan, transfer case, bell housing, or cooler/lines then I’m out of ideas
. You sure it’s not orange? Could be coolant, which is much more likely to leak in these trucks. The qd lines are garbage, o-rings always going bad. They don’t use the orange coolant anymore, but if you still have the original in there then it could be orange.
ETA: when in doubt hit up Ford Tech Makuloco. Maybe this link will help.

Indeed. The "T" is notorious for leaks.

Also the hose that connects on top of engine also leaks. Took me a while to figure that one out because the coolant would evaporate.

The front seal on the input shaft on mine went bad at about 150k. Check where the trans mates up to the motor.

As others have said I’d make damn sure it wasn’t coolant before I even question the transmission. The Y connector leaks when the truck sits for a while after running. It heats up, expands slightly while driving, after parking, it cools off, shrinks and leaks. Very common issue.

Water soluble = coolant
Doesn't mix with water = trans or engine oil

First leak on mine was from the qd at the coolant reservoir. A company makes a kit to delete the qd here, replaces it with a traditional rubber hose and screw clamp. Have had that for close to 10 years with no issues. Second was the o-rings in the Y that you hear about the most. Can get the o-rings from Oreilly for next to nothing, easy fix. Third time was the hose to the heater core coming from the driver side, there’s about a 1” section of a plastic joint in the hose that will rot/crack inside the braid for some reason, near the passenger valve cover. Only reason I can see for this to be there is designed failure to make money in the service department, it serves no purpose. But again, you can buy a new plastic piece alone from Oreilly and just cut your old one out, and fix it with screw clamps. And lastly, the shorter hose to the heater core coming from the passenger side of the intake will leak at the qd into the intake. Both of the heater core hoses when leaking will show up down by your starter, they run off the back of the motor right there. These (and the water pump) are the only things I have ever had to replace as far as the powertrain goes on my 2012. Been nails otherwise.

Y Connector
I changed the Y connector for coolant on my 2014. It was a Capital B to get it back on. Needed another set of hands. Mine was cracked.

I went ahead and took it to a mechanic this morning. After I walked him through every where I had already checked this was his first thought.
I'm hoping that since the truck is still shifting fine I haven't done any damage to the transmission, this just started saturday, so it's probably been driven ~15-20 miles since I noticed the leak

Highly unlikely. It'd have to lose pressure or overheat before it starts screwing stuff up. It won't lose pressure till the pump starts sucking air which generally doesn't happen until the sump is almost empty. Both of those conditions will throw fault codes.

Well. Just got a call from the mechanic.
Apparently I had a quart of transmission fluid in my truck bed that's been back there for Lord knows how long that busted open.
Yes, I feel like an idiot- yes I am also happy that I'm not looking at 600-1000 dollar repair.
Here to take my lumps and thanks everyone for the help with diagnostics. This explains why I couldn't not trace any fluid back to the transmission itself

Any Mfer that says he hasn’t done stupid is lying out Dey azz :lol
It’s beyond relief when you realize stupid only hurts a little bit.
Your truck has a closed system so that qt would’ve taken an act of congress to use.

Were you able to stop the leak or did you have to buy a another container?....wink...grin.

Echoing the coolant. I have a 2014 and the Y connection that goes to the radiator and wherever else started leaking coolant. O rings flattened out. Have replaced it twice in the 10 years i've had the truck. Theres videos on youtube. Mechanic wanted $350.
If thats what it is the part is called Ford Genuine Parts T-Connector (DR3Z-8566-A)
ETA: Didnt see the origin of the leak
