How different would things be if Reagan didn't cut mental health funding?

In 1981 he cut the federal budget by 25% for mental health services. A result of this was the closing of hundreds of asylums.
How different would things be today if we had less deranged individuals wandering the streets?

And then the homeless population exploded.

You probably wouldn’t be posting from the rubber room.

Probably a slight difference, but it would have shrunk to nearly what we are now anyway.
We would have had the same “let them out of prison” progressives demanding that we “let them out of the asylums”.

You are conflating 2 things
The 1981 cut was to a program created *one year prior*, signed into law by Carter. It never got off the ground, really.
The closures of asylums began in the 1950s, and was a nationwide, bipartisan action. There were concerns about conditions in the asylums and violations of human rights. In hindsight it was likely bs and the closures did more harm than good

You can’t blame everything on the government. Communities have to take some self responsibility for their neighbors.
Churches, non profits, etc. should be bearing the burden of these programs. Not my tax dollars.

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Illnesses (DSM)
Look at the progression of stupidity from DSM 3 (published 1980) to DSM 5 (published 2013) with regards to how they address transsexuals.
This played a much bigger role than defunding metal hospitals, which has proven to be a mistake as well.

Deinstitutionalization began under Kennedy, not Carter. Reagean neutered it completely by shifting the responsibility to states through block grants. I'm not asking you who started it, I'm asking what would be different if Reagan didn't accelerate the crisis by slashing funding of community-based care.

if we are just going to throw out hypotheticals then why not, and stay with me, why hasn't congress done anything about mental health in the 40 years since?
congress controls the purse.
it's awful early for you to be posting. did you start getting hammered at lunch?

Mental health is funding this tranny shite.
Posted on 9/14/25 at 12:32 am to Tunasntigers92
The problem isn’t the removal of this funding. We have stopped labeling certain issues as being mental illness due to the left. The left does not want accountability. You have got to get back to holding people accountable for their actions.

Regan cutting funding in 81 wasnt what caused it. There were many good reasons to close institutions back then. There are many good reasons to reestablish them now with advancements in medicine, technology and oversight.

We have a mental health problem because the left champions for ignorant lifestyles and crime and the right allows it to continue.

You do know that there have been 3 democrat presidents in office for 20 years since then they could have restored the funding. They are the "giving" party. What happened?
There have been 3 Republicans for almost 17 years, too.
