Indiana's approach to non conference scheduling is a travesty

Mega conferences are one of the reasons I don't really care much for college sports anymore, where a team like Indiana last year can get a favorable conference schedule draw and avoid pretty much all of the good teams

It's weak sauce no doubt but TBH it's also roughly what Miss State was doing under Dan Mullen.

I posted this in another thread and I'll repost it here because I could not possibly agree more.

"Indiana's 2024 football schedule:
August 31 - 31-7 win over 4-8 FIU
September 6 - 77-3 win over 4-8 Western Illinois (FCS)
September 14 - 42-13 win at 5-7 UCLA
September 21 - 52-14 win over 5-7 Charlotte (who fired their coach before the season ended)
September 28 - 42-28 win over 4-8 Maryland
October 5 - 41-24 win at 4-8 Northwestern (in a soccer stadium)
October 19 - 56-7 win over 7-6 Nebraska (with a true freshman QB)
October 26 - 31-17 win over 6-7 Washington (with a first-year head coach)
November 2 - 47-10 win at 5-7 Michigan State (with a first-year head coach)
November 9 - 20-15 win over 8-5 Michigan (with a first-year head coach)
November 23 - 38-15 LOSS at national champion Ohio State
November 30 - 66-0 win over 1-11 Purdue
December 20 - 27-17 loss at #2 Notre Dame

Indiana's best win was against an 8-5 Michigan team. That is clearly a quality win. Their next best win was against a 7-6 Nebraska team (with a true freshman quarterback) followed by a win over a 6-7 Washington team (with a first-year head coach). All three of those games were at home.

They avoided Penn State, Oregon, Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota in conference play and only played one B1G team with at least 8 wins.

It is absolutely outrageous they were in the playoff last season."

You gonna leave out an 11-1 Big Ten team?

This is true.

Unlike Indiana, the playoffs were different back in '14, when Schtate had their chance to get into the playoffs. But their best team ever in their putrid history lost to an injury-riddled Ole Miss team in the Egg Bowl.

Non-conference opponents for Mississippi State under Dan Mullen's tenure
Conference USA - 12 (one of which was in a bowl)
FCS - 9
Sun Belt - 8
Independent - 4 (BYU and UMass twice)
MAC - 2 (one of which was in a bowl)
ACC - 1
Big XII - 1
WAC - 1

That's 4 games against P5 opponents, including BYU, out of a potential 37.

What was even wilder was 2011 and 2012. In 2011, Schtate played 3 games against Conference USA teams. In 2012, they played 3 games against Sun Belt teams. A quarter of their regular season games in those two seasons were played against C-USA or Sun Belt teams.

Absofrickinglutely considering they played three decent teams and nine shitty ones.

Flip their schedule with Minnesota (who played UNC, Iowa, SC, Illinois, Penn State, and Wisconsin) and they're 8-4 at best.

I couldn't imagine knowing all of this about my own sports team, let alone another one.

Yikes.

Nebraska looks to have a pretty favorable schedule also for playoff contention if they can get by Michigan next weekend and then everyone except @ Penn St in November
