Funny how his help in developing a legit OL with true freshmen starting at both OT spots made him great and now he magically sucks.

Reality is it’s not just an issue with Davis, but perhaps the lack of a true center that has hurt this team. Moore is clearly that guy, but the other interior linemen have been issues.

Also, TEs have not been that great of blockers in the past couple of years.

Perhaps part of the issue is the playcalling or offensive scheme. The running game is set up for failure with how Sloan calls the offense. It’s ridiculously predictable, shows no creativity and unlike when Miles was here, being run exclusively out of the shotgun.

Miles es able to succeed because running the I formation or single back formations helped the OL. Without a dynamic dual threat QB, Sloan’s running game is anemic. It’s on him to adjust and he refuses to do so.

Exact point is that have 3 downs from the 3 to score a TD. Run in 3 straight times out of the shotgun. It’s ridiculous and actually hurts play action too.

That said, it doesn’t mean Davis has no fault, but people blaming him entirely or for even just the bulk of blame when he’s been proven multiple times and on multiple teams is ridiculous.

Sloan has no record of success anywhere calling a running game. His two years calling plays in Ruston, they averaged 2.9 (2020) and 3.4 (2021) ypc. The year before when he didn’t call plays and got co-OC in name only, Franklin had them at 4.6 ypc in a real season

He sucks at it and it’s almost entirely on him.

Can you at least let us know when Davis was good? I didn’t see you address that in the NOVEL you just wrote .

Davis does not skate with no responsibility for his own position group.
Even last year, with all the talent, the waaay underperformed.

If you ever thought Davis was actually good at developing/coaching then that’s on you. Davis could always get the talent here. He just can’t coach it and develop it and it’s been obvious for years. Guys like Will Campbell doesn’t come around very often. He just had it regardless of coaching.
Most young recruits need developing and good coaching and Davis just can’t do it.

The development in the run game isn’t there. We’ve gotten star recruits but it’s not showing.

This board has never been high on him. Even with the big names last year our o line still sucked arse.

I don’t really remember people saying he was great. I sure as hell never said it. Pending the rest of this season, it might be time for him to go. LSU should always be able to run the damn ball when we need to.

i’m not even gonna bother to read all your babble, but the proof is right there in front of us every Saturday LSU for two years now hasn’t been able to fricking run block and nobody really shows improvement. I’d say that’s all the proof I need.

What do we think is an acceptable YPC for LSU?

Here is what Brad has looked like in the SEC as an OL coach. The only times he was above 5 YPC were with Jayden Daniels as the top rusher for the team.

2017 - Florida - 400 carries, 1720 yards, 4.3 YPC
2018 - Mizzou - 553 carries, 2631 yards, 4.8 YPC
2019 - Mizzou - 476 carries, 1820 yards, 3.8 YPC
2020 - Arkansas - 394 carries, 1513 yards, 3 YPC
2021 - LSU - 445 carries, 1482 yards, 3.3 YPC
2022 - LSU - 517 carries, 2572 yards, 5 YPC
2023 - LSU - 430 carries, 2659 yards, 6.2 YPC
2024 - LSU - 373 carries, 1513 yards, 4.1 YPC

3.6 YPC so far this season

I remember people being excited also because Davis was working for Sam Pittman who is thought to be a great OL coach, and he's from Baton Rouge, so people thought he'd recruit LA effectively.

I don't know how anyone can deny the OL has underperformed during Davis' tenure. We're a one dimensional team and were last year with a line full of NFL draft picks. There's clearly a problem.

They are trained for finesse pass blocking and lack strength and technique to run block.

The one thing I never understood with the LSU Oline and pass blocking is their first steps are backwards. When I played you fired off the ball no matter what the play and made contact with the man in front of you. When Chester takes 2 steps back he’s already given the defender an advantage. At least hold your ground at LOS but it seems this is the technique they are taught.

I really don't get some of this, either. The rule of thumb always has been that pass pro is much more difficult to master than run blocking. It seems this line is in reverse. But I guess if you focus so much on pass blocking, you may lose focus on getting below the pad level of the guy you are blocking, and push for run blocking. I am really unsure what to think of what's going on.

I'm in the middle on this one about Davis and development. There were 4 LSU OL drafted in the latest draft and 2 of them I didn't think would be. Obviously, he didn't kill their talent. BUT for the highly rated guys they have signed, seems like more should have been expected in their play. Echols comes to mind...Davis comes to mind.

I never really thought about the importance of a center past snapping the ball and being a decent blocker. But for them to call out the blocking schemes really is an important as anything. I disagree that the running plays are predictable. Sloan has used the WR to carry the ball A LOT so far. And I find it interesting that LSU runs the ball much better with the WR than the RB even against the same part of the DL. My theory is that these LSU runners need space away from the LOS to perform their best. I don't think LSU has the right personnel to run the RPO. Nussmeier is no Daniels either running or passing so that is an issue. And with the RPO the decision as to what to do happens really close to the LOS. I would suggest bringing back the "toss sweep" as I've mentioned before.
Lastly, I'm still wondering where is the "run game coordinator" they made such a big deal when hired. Is he eating Cheetos and drinking a Diet Coke like John Chavis used to do.
