Middle age pudgy white guy. Trying to get in better shape, look better in my clothes. Been back in the gym about a month now.

What are some good supplements to take? Brand and any suggestions are appreciated.

Used to work out in my early 20s and would take EAS creatine from Walmart , good flavor and had good results but I dont think EAS makes supplements anymore. Last creatine I tried were these chews which were OK but gritty and like a Now or later texture.

Never been able to find a protein that dissolved good in water or one that tasted ok.

Any help is appreciated.

I’ve had to take long breaks in training due to injuries or other medical procedures and my trainer always has be start out with no supplements and focusing on making sure my diet has enough water, protein and fiber. After a month or two there I’ll start adding supplemental protein and creatine. But he’s adamant that he wants me just focusing on diet at first while I get my body moving back into previous form.

I’m sure others have varied opinions but that’s what I’ve done a couple times now and it’s been really successful for me getting over it. I’m currently recovering from 9 months out of the gym and off the bike and I’m a couple weeks into the rehab program and it’s going well.

Creatine mono + a whey protein is about the only "must take"

Just man up and down the hatch and quit trying to find something that tastes great

I use dymatize iso100. It's pretty good. Have one of the ninja cup blenders. Try to fill what you can with whole foods first. I eat 6 eggs per day. 4 in the AM then a protein shake, not the other way around.

Great advice.

Creatine will help. Also, just hanging your diet to high protein will help you more than just doing the powders, which are mostly garbage. If you’re middle aged and pudgy, also get T levels checks and make sure you’re ok on that front. Also, lift to failure as much as you can. Pure volume doesn’t do shite.

As others, I take creatine and a whey protein shake. Daily vitamin also. Eat my body weight in grams of protein.

There are no must take supplements. Get your diet in order, workout consistently, and get enough sleep. Master this, then worry about adding supplements to push even further.

You don’t need to take any supplements.

You likely need to eat very differently, removing most on-grid meals as you possibly can.

Cook at home with whole ingredients and remove cheap oils from cooking.

Magnesium should be added but you’d already be taking that if this wasn’t just about getting in shape.

Whey isn’t needed, especially for you. Just eat good quality stuff.

I 'Kige Ramsey' this.

Unless you are training for a tri-Athlon you can get what your body needs with good food.

I would just add:

Cut out all sugars/HFCs. Its challenging because it basically in lots of grocery store foods.

For one, most people wouldn’t.

But this guy’s description for sure makes it totally not necessary

How about just good quality food and cut out the dog crap carbs/sugars? I assume you aren’t looking to join the UFC or NFL.

I second creatine, bcaa’s, and protein. I actually think everyone should be on creatine given the average American diet. It helps not only muscle hypertrophy, but has also been shown to improve cognition, especially in the elderly. I also recommend collagen daily. It’s great for joints if you are running/lifting, as well as hair, nails, and skin. Good luck!
