me -

- lord of the flies anything goes when that bell rings
- bullies would be kicking people or strowing their books in the hall on the way out
- bullies hovering around the bike racks like hornets feasting on bees when everyone else approached to get their bikes
- kids walking/biking home, walking off into the woods, walking to the superette to play space invaders & oogle the Playboy pinball machine, seeing how much candy they could buy with 11 cents and back then, there was a ton of individual candy you could buy by the piece
- checking out the 7 'bad kids' standing around smoking behind the store
- heading to a friend's house whose parents weren't home and watching an R rated movie on HBO
- not going home at all, playing in the dirt, riding bikes on the little path we made next to chauvin bayou for an hour
- at some point making it home and your mom making you sit down and do freaking homework

My Son
- bell rings at 3pm; there are 100 soccer moms and a few dads hanging out in the parking lot waiting for the kids
- 3 school resource officers standing around jaw-jacking and packing heat and checking out the MILFs in the yoga pants
- kids come out dressed perfect in their school polos, knit belt and white nikes
- dogs randomly walking around on leashes and the occasional bearded dragon ( ok that was me)
- ruffle my kid's hair, take him to the car, he asks the daily question 'can we stop at zaxbys today?'
- kid gets chauferred home in a car with AC and little shite does 2 pages of homework then he's off playing with the dogs in the yard.

i mean, i get it..i'm 150 years old..but shite, it just came to me today that my world at 5th grade was SO VERY DIFFERENT that its almost like i came from a different reality.

how does your kids school experience differ from yours?

Father would send Ernest to pick me up in the Bentley. I have S Jr. take part in a carpool with his classmates to help build character.

I rode the bus home and would get I trouble and yelled at by the bus driver.

My kids ride the bus home and my son gets in trouble on the bus all the time.

I was a latchkey kid.

My kids sometimes go home to an empty house, sometimes mom is there WFH.

Not much difference than the WFH by parents sometimes.

Mine was almost no different except it’s 50/50 bikes and electric scooters and a lot of technological advances/uses for the better (usually).

I love seeing kids in both bikes and scooters with fishing poles directly to pond once they are released.

Edit: we still get reports that some bad kids are flicking off cars and pulling shenanigans when they do ride the bus.
So, no difference there.

i remember 3-6 busses lined up in the fire lanes when leaving but other than teacher's cars, i honestly can't remember any parents picking their kids up from school.

5th grade me ride bus to school about 1.5 miles to school with my 2nd grade brother. We either ride bus home or walked…my choice. Usually walked.

Got home and let ourself in. Parents worked. Did homework or watched TV. As soon as mom got home I headed to woods with pellet gun or fishing pole.

No one picked up a kid.

Each generation has it easier than the generation before.

I guess that's called progress?

My 6th grader does about 20% of the homework I had in the early 90s and gets to play way more sports after school because she doesnt have to do farm labor for grandpa like I did. I remember my dad constantly bitching at my mom about the amount of homework i had. I'm jealous of my kids honestly, but I'm a tough sonofabitch because of my childhood. I don't know what it was about the bully thing but I never had a problem even though I was a smaller kid. I had a reputation of being a little psycho though, maybe that helped.
