4th & 2 with 15s Left in the Half

Kelly said yesterday that the analytics sheet told him to go for it, but in hindsight it was the wrong call due to not having much time even if you convert.
I was screaming that at the TV in real time.
Is anyone else a bit concerned that our 10 million dollar coach didn’t understand that in the moment?

Analytics can lead you astray. Play the flow of the game instead.

It’s a split between ego, trusting your offense, and analytics.
They convert, nothing to talk about. We lose by 3 it’s a much bigger deal.

He's made that kind of call several times while at LSU. He's too greedy for 6 when he should just take the easy 3. It's who he is. At his age, he isn't going to change.

One of those situations where you got to write on the sheet: analytics wrong

It amazes me how these meathead coaches do not have an understanding of how situational the analytics stuff is. You should never go for 2 in regulation for example when your number of maximum future possessions is vague for example. With 3-5 minutes left, you can pretty reliably say you'll get 2 or 3 maximum possessions if you stop them with 3 and outs and consider timeouts remaining. If you need more scores than 2 or 3 x 7 will give you, then you consider 2's. But when you get into the 8+ minute territory, the possibility for all kinds of other stuff that changes possession totals can make the difference between losing bc you needed 2s and losing bc you failed to even score 1 when 1 would have been enough.

yes
It was retarded.
It was obvious.

Same. I’m glad he acknowledged the mistake, but it was obvious to me in real time.

It's really a misapplication of analytics.

Misses the point completely.
There's no issue with going for a TD instead of a FG. That's reasonable.
It was the time and lack of timeouts that make it retarded.

Im sure analytics do say go for it, but certainly not under 15 seconds to go in half with zero timeouts. You pretty much have to throw to endzone at that point to not risk something dumb like converting then time running out

Worst mistake the entire game by the coaching staff with an otherwise perfect game plan.
Even if you convert, you are out of time outs. You have to immediately spike the ball to stop the clock again, then you maybe have 10 seconds to run two plays from the 10 to score a TD.
If there was 30 seconds left and a TO in your pocket, maybe.
Not having that three points was crucial while the refs were purposely tilting the game in Clemson's favor the entire second half.

Same here.
Even if we had converted, we would have been out of timeouts, so we would have had to rush plays, and our only options would have been to throw to the sidelines or into the end zone. Not only that, but Kelly wasted precious time before calling timeout. If you know you're going to go for it, then you call that timeout immediately. He let at least one play's worth of time tick off, maybe even two.
What concerns me is apparently Kelly and his assistants had not thought ahead to that scenario. This situation happens a few times every season. You have to be prepared and understand how many timeouts you have, how much time you have and how much field you have to cover. You also need to understand the game at that moment. It was a tight, defensive struggle on the road.
In that case, you ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS take the points.
The other issue is the play call they came up with was terrible. It was way too long of a throw to Hilton. That gave the defense plenty of time to react. Even if Hilton didn't fumble, there was no way he was getting to the sticks. He would have been a yard short.

Maybe he pulled a Leslie and forgot he was out of TOs

BK needs to throw his analytics sheet in the trash because he has been horrible on 4th down in the red zone at LSU.

It was a complete dick measuring contest with Dabo.
Clemson was going for it on 4th, so he did. It was completely illogical.
And analytics takes the clock into account, so he’s lying.

"Common College Football Coaching Sense" says to kick the field goal and take the points going into halftime!

Yep, you got it figured out!!!! Dude you should go into Couch Coaching because you got it nailed!

The good thing is that it happened game 1, so he’ll know what to do when we get in similar situations going forward

Close game on the road – – – you take the points every single time. This is how Leann Kiffin repeatedly coaches himself out of an SEC championship.
