Wild horses on Peason Ridge.
quote:
The horses seem to date back to the horses brought to Colombia and Venezuela during the period of Colonial Spain pre-Louisianna Purchase. Possibly from the Spanish Barb and Barb horses from North Africa. “These crosses produced some of the most highly prized horses of the era. The classical Baroque style of the Spanish Barb . . . displayed by their natural carriage, intelligence, and sensible temperament.” This genetic pool is considered “a very rare source of genetic diversity. Genetic diversity represents health and an ability to adapt to a changing environment.” Note: These horses are not Mustangs.

There's a couple on an island across the bayou from the Pointe Aux Chenes marina that I always see when I'm down there. They're always together.

Not sure if it's the same group they mention in the article, but there is a small herd that shows up on the side of Hwy 165 between Woodworth and Ellick. That's about 45 miles ATCF from Peason Ridge WMA.

From other articles I read, the horses on Peason Ridge are unique and not related to the feral horses in other parts of the state.

I remember years ago HTV rolling some storm video from one of the hurricanes and you could see some horses in the distance. One of them slipped and the other horses dove in to help the other one that lost their footing. I didn’t know they were wild.
I always thought it was a horse owner that didn’t evacuate his horses knowing a storm was coming. It had to have been for Rita or Ike.

These horses interfere with important military training and are thus a Threat to US National Security.
They should be designated as Terrorist Horses and then incarcerated.

An A10 pilot once told me that he harvested a couple of those horses with his Warthog.

These horses are indigenous and members of the First Horses community. They were here long before the Army Man came and stole their land. All they want to do is live in peace away from the Army Man and his loud noise making devices.

Were the Spaniards really white after the Moors got through with them?

Anyone who has ever been stationed at Fort Polk. I remember my first live fire exercise to waking to a herd of horses congregated near our gun line. Needless to say when the first howitzer fired they disappeared pretty quickly!

I’ve heard about this from a LA veterinarian. Said it was mostly horse abandoned by owners who couldn’t afford them.
Problem was, they went into fort Polk and could be a hazard to soldiers practicing night jumps. Initially, they just planned on shooting them, but locals heard and protested.
He (the veterinarian) was hired to help put them on birth control to keep them from breeding.

It's plausible if they meandered into the impact area during a training exercise, but once the A10 fires up the Vulcans I'm sure they would exit stage right with a quickness.
They used to have a herd of elk hang out in the impact area at Ft Sill. They would have 155 mm artillery shells going off in their vicinity and wouldn't budge. They just kept on eating!
