Was not surprised but also was very sad to see its come to this. Armed Guard outside of Mass. I hope this is a temporary thing but recall seeing armed guards outside of Jewish synagogues in Europe in the early 2000s and thought it was symbolic as to where they were as a society and can't help fell the same with us here and now.

Religious violence has been the way of the world for thousands of years. Why would you expect differently now?

Nothing at our church. However, I'm fairly certain one of the ushers at 7am mass every Sunday is strapped.

Let’s not pretend religious violence has been a thing in the US really ever until the very recent last few years.

We've had armed guards at our church for years. They are "undercover" with concealed weapons but there is a presence.

Not our world. Not here. This is getting worse and everyone knows it.

I’m on my church’s concealed carry team, we always have armed individuals.

There is nothing sad about it. You should absolutely have a police presence at Mass. Just like the police are at malls, high school football games, movie theaters and carnivals, they should be at churches as well.

A couple years ago i went to an event at a conservative Synagogue in Houston. There were armed guards at the gate to the parking lot and armed guards at the door. They had to have security for every event.
No church should have to do this.
No church should have to do this.

Let’s not pretend religious violence has been a thing in the US really ever until the very recent last few years.
The loyalist Anglicans of Virginia attacked ministers of other denominations that preached for independence.
The KKK burned a lot of crosses on Catholic properties throughout their history as well.
It isn’t anywhere near new - and that’s just two examples.

There are still armed guards outside synagogues nearly every week. Been that way for years.
During this time of the year especially. Just the nature of this world now.

You should absolutely have a police presence at Mass.

I disagree. The idea that the Church should need to armed protection is offensive. The idea we need guards on the house of God.
This started some time back when you had crazy folks go in and vandalize Catholic Churches, desecrating the host or alter and destroying statues, stain glass etc. Churches began to lock up and so you lost an easy place to go and quietly pray. Gone were the days of slipping in, sitting and praying. The vandalism was mostly when people were not there, though there are some shocking videos of Muslims openly destroying stuff inside churches in Europe while people were there praying.
Now we seem to have crossed some other low point, where people are being attacked while in the Church. To me, these all point to a society that is collapsing and losing control of itself. That's what makes it sad.

Maybe. In my lifetime, though, it seems to be getting worse. Maybe it’s like the economy. Sure, there have been times in history when it was worse. But going from the relative peace and prosperity of the late 80s-early 2000s, in the US anyway, feels like a downgrade over the past decade. More violence and worse economy. I can only speak from my position as a middle class white person in Louisiana. shite has been going downhill.
