Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order in response to the possible deployment of the National Guard.

The "Protecting Chicago Initiative" order demands that President Donald Trump stand down from "his threat to deploy National Guard," according to a press release from the city.

Johnson said the order is in response to a "credible threat" that the deployment of troops will happen in a couple of days.

quote:

The order also affirms that Chicago police will remain a locally controlled law enforcement agency under the city.

"We do not want military checkpoints or armored vehicles on our streets and we do not want to see families ripped apart. We will take any action necessary to protect the rights of all Chicagoans," Johnson said.

Under the executive order, the mayor directs the city to pursue all legal and legislative avenues to stop the deployment.

quote:

The order also calls on federal law enforcement and U.S. Armed Forces personnel to abide by the policies laid out in municipal law.

Some of the policies include: law enforcement cannot conceal their identities while performing their duties; activated body cameras must be worn when interacting with a member of the public; and personnel must display which agency they are with including their last name and badge number.

How are we squaring this with Federalism? I am at odds. We generally defer to the State unless the federal government is explicitly granted the powers they seek to enforce.

We cannot forget we are for states’ rights, correct?

Trump should say “fine” and let them continue to get what they voted for.

He’s already done it… every presser him and his admin need to state the new stats in DC and say he doesn’t have the authority ti deploy in other cities but has offered and every mayor/governor has turned him down. That if your leaders really cared about their citizens and not their power/fame, they’d be using him to put an end to the rampant crime.

From what I can gather on this matter of 'States' Rights'... depends on whose ox is being taken behind the woodshed

Also withhold Federal funding to the city.

Seems like he should just his governor if he wants to prevent the national guard from deploying to Chicago.

Unless this all political theater of course.

I DO NOT WANT the NG federalized and deployed to cities. DC is a special case as it's federal territory. This is a precedent we don't want to set.

Trump is within his rights to deploy forces to help ICE round up illegals if the state isn't cooperating. frick that mayor. He can't stand in the way of the president deporting illegals.

I don't think the NG is being mobilized in the same way as in DC.

They are a municipality, not a State. There is no discussion.

I find it fascinating how badly Dems don’t want the success in dc replicated.

Trump doesnt have the authority to send the guard into anywhere but DC. The difference with CA was they were protecting Federal Building and Agents, not enforcing the law.

He just needs to keep talking shite about offering it to states and them refusing. The tide is turning even further on the Dems.

We also aren't for elected leaders allowing violent savages to terrorize the streets either...

Do you live in Chicago? If not then they aren’t your elected leaders.
