I was visiting friends this week in BR and was shocked at how shitty it has become. The trash everywhere, the third world demographics, homeless, drug zombies walking along College Dr., poor condition of the roads, traffic and lack of proper infrastructure. Was it just a bad and unlucky week or is it as shitty as it seemed?

The areas of town that were nice 25 years ago are no longer the nice areas.
The "line" has moved from Greenwell Springs in the 90's to Florida Blvd in the early 2000's. That line has now moved to I-12 and may be more south than that in recent years.

Buddy, I've never known Baton Rouge to be any different than how you described it.

Interesting. I wonder what effect on the overall town, if any, if LSU had stricter academic standards and tighter admission qualifications. Maybe it's beyond repair.

It’s as shitty as it seemed
The bad thing is there’s no where to go, areas like Central, Zachary & Denham are slowly headed in the same direction
You can get away from it but eventually it’s going to catch up to you

What's up JML? It's nice to "see" you in a non baseball thread. I wonder if its shitty-ness will eventually affect our beloved baseball world.

I noticed it all go downhill after I left.

I doubt I was the one keeping it fun and safe, though I did my part with both.

But living somewhere far more classy, clean, peaceful, and safe opened my eyes to what a shithole Baton Rouge has become, and probably always has been.

I was deployed a little before Katrina happened.

I remember coming back to BR in 2007 and when i got here, i was thinking when in TF did all these people move here. Why is there so much traffic?

Outside of obvious “bad” areas, College and Siegen are probably the two worst representatives of the city.

Not sure what % of this correlates to your point, if any, but since it's the 20th anniversary...I will never forget evacuating to BR at my grandparents house along with several other family members. I had lived in BR 2000-2004 at LSU, and was in town constantly visiting family, so I think my perspective on the city was pretty solid. The place literally changed overnight. All of a sudden, a city with some moderate infrastructure issues was totally overwhelmed. Not trying to say it's a good excuse, but the difference in Baton Rouge on August 28th 2005 vs August 30th 2005 was absolutely jarring. Part of me thinks the city has never fully recovered.

Pretty much. And with Louisiana ranked last in everything good, and first in everything bad, it’s only going to continue into oblivion. We have a pretty football stadium surrounded by 500 sq miles of shite with a handful of old money neighborhoods suffering in Baton Rouge while they get encroached on by the trash creep. I don’t see it ever turning around. I hope my kids don’t stay here when they finish college. Go put roots down somewhere better.

Since LSU is the only positive in BR I think they will continue to keep campus as crime free as possible
Meaning there’s a ton of security for baseball games around all the parking lots, I don’t worry about vehicle being broke into

Let's hope they protect it like their bloated administrative salaries depend on it staying safe.
