State Rep. Julie Emerson likely to challenge Bill Cassidy if U.S. Rep. Letlow doesn’t

U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy is likely to face another challenger in his bid to win reelection next year.
State Rep. Julie Emerson said Wednesday that she is likely to jump into the race if U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow chooses not to run.
“I’m waiting to see what she will do. I do think there’s an avenue for another candidate, whoever that is,” said Emerson, a Republican from Carencro, just north of Lafayette. “If she formally announces she’s definitely out, then the chances I get in greatly increase.”
Demonstrating his vulnerability as he seeks a third term, Cassidy is already facing three major Republican challengers: Treasurer John Fleming, state Sen. Blake Miguez of New Iberia and Public Service Commissioner Eric Skrmetta, who represents suburban New Orleans.

Letlow remains the biggest wild card in the Senate race.
She was first elected to the U.S. House in a special election in 2021 to fill a seat opened by the death of her husband, Luke, from COVID. She had been a senior administrator at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
Now the biggest question in Louisiana politics is whether Letlow will seek a third full term in the House, give up that seat and challenge Cassidy or apply to be the next president of LSU or the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

Emerson said that she, too, is getting widespread encouragement to get into the Senate race.

Emerson noted that she and Letlow are close political allies and have discussed their possible candidacies. Emerson said she doesn’t know what Letlow will decide.
Gov. Jeff Landry has privately encouraged Letlow to challenge Cassidy, sources say.
On Tuesday, asked for his thinking on the Senate race, Landry said, “Senator Cassidy has to go out and make the case for reelection. Those that believe they can do a better job will sign up. The president is ultimately going to be the biggest factor in this, not the governor. The president seems to have the biggest footprint in these federal races.”

I'd vote for Fidel Castro before skinny neck cassidy.

Xan John is also running and it’s a Deep State conspiracy to leave him out of that article.

Cassidy is already facing three major Republican challengers
Splitting the anti-Cassidy vote 3-4 ways is how that POS ends up getting re-elected. Its already hard enough to defeat an incumbent in a party primary, so we need all the people who are fed up with Cassidy united behind one challenger. Hopefully a few of the challengers drop out and rally behind whichever is polling strongest.

In the GOP senate primary I'll vote for anyone but Cassidy.

Maybe.
But Cassidy still would have to get 50% +1 to survive the party primary. So as long as the anti-Cassidy voters line up behind whomever faces Cassidy in the closed primary runoff, then he still can’t advance to the general.

Yep. The classic splitter strategy. On the national stage it's how the GOP ended up with McCain and Romney. They tried the splitter strategy with Jeb in 2015 but Trump was too strong.

Julia Letlow would be a problem for Cassidy.
Julie Emerson not so much.

Cassidy is going to win easily isn't he?
The primary election is in 7 months and there's not an obvious challenger to Cassidy. The Louisiana GOP hasn't made an endorsement, the Governor wants Letlow to run but shes made no indication, meanwhile Cassidy has millions from establishment GOP funds.

FYI, this is a change from the previous jungle primary system. From AI:
quote:
January 22, 2024, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry signed HB17 into law, which changes the system for certain elections, including U.S. Senate races, starting in 2026. Under this new law, Louisiana will implement closed partisan primaries for congressional elections, including the U.S. Senate. In these closed primaries, only registered party members (e.g., Republicans for the GOP primary) can vote to select their party’s nominee. If no candidate in the GOP primary receives more than 50% of the vote, a primary runoff election will be held between the top two vote-getters to determine the Republican nominee, who will then advance to the general election.

Julia Letlow just found some money in an old bank account to purchase a new home.

Not anymore. It doesn't matter how many challengers Cassidy has. He still has to win a GOP primary runoff.
It would matter in the old jungle primary. But the number of opponents don't matter in a closed primary. As long as people aren't voting for Cassidy.

Cassidy is going to get a lot of votes from RINO’s and people who vote on name recognition. Even if he only gets 35% of the vote, if you have the other 65% split 3 or 4 ways then Cassidy will win.
ETA: just saw the post 2 above mine saying there’d be a party primary runoff if nobody breaks 50%. That would make me feel better

He is losing to Fleming right now so this broad is trying to help him win.

April 18, 2026 - Party Primary (need >50% to avoid runoff)
May 30, 2026 - Party Primary Runoff
November 3, 2026 - General/Congressional election

I think the initial proposed bill allowed the closed primary winner to win with a plurality. But my understanding is yes, someone has to get 50% +1 to move on to the General Election.
So again, having multiple GOP candidates doesn’t give Cassidy a win, as long as the anti-Cassidy voter at the end of the day goes to the polls to vote for whichever challenger faces off against him.
Personally, I like multiple candidate so ideas can be put out there, as long as a plurality isn’t the way to survive the primary.

Gov. Huey P Landry has already turned cold on both Fleming and Miguez because they dared to contradict him once or twice. In Blake’s instance, it was actually pretty minor, but that doesn’t matter. So he needs a candidate. I’m betting he and his circle are the ones telling Julie they need her to run if Letlow decides not to.
I like Julie Emerson. I do think she’s one of the most genuine people there in Baton Rouge. However, I’m afraid she’s being used here and would serve herself better to stay in the state legislature for now. Fortunately, she doesn’t have to give up her seat; but I really think it would be too soon for her to be put into that den of thieves and pedo protectors in DC.
