I was a Combat mos, 19k Abrams crewmember, but our brm was just a fam fire and you didn't even have to qualify with a M16/M4.

Our personal weapon was a M9 pistol and that was the ONLY weapon we had to qualify with during OSUT. Well, the pistol and throwing grenades.

A tank crew only has two M4 rifles for 4 people, and we never even ever took them out of the sponson boxes (storage compartment), only ever when eyeballing them to give a Green 2.

I didn't go to basic, 15 week osut focused on how to operate a killing machine.

I don't remember MOSs being separated out in basic training. I think all MOSs had the same basic. After basic you went to AIT (your school for your military occupation specialty)

I would estimate it was a couple of weeks.

Seems like it was around 4-6 weeks, but this was in 1990 so may have changed.

There was a difference in BCT between combat arms MOS's and everyone else, they had 2 additional weeks of familiarization on "US Weapons" (M249, M240B, M2, AT4, etc) but everyone got the same BRM. Then again BCT for me was late-1990's at Ft. Benning. Now it's not quite as stark a difference, still OSUT for combat MOS's but BRM and weapons familiarization is roughly the same and generally less of it. The newer rifle qual tables means more emphasis is put on the individual's assigned unit to get them fully trained, BCT means getting them to shoot well enough not to injure themselves or anyone else...

If you are an 11 Bravo, you go to Benning for basic. Longer and more infantry focused. BRM is supposedly longer.

All others go to Fort Jackson and the other starships. Shorter. I think ours was ten days to two weeks.

is that new?

because i was 77F that became 92F and I went to benning? but this was over 2 decades ago

we had BCT and even had some 11B and direct arms mos in with us, even had 2 that had ranger school and special forces written in to the contract and like half had air assult school written in.

then we all went to different bases for AiT. 11Bravo stayed at Benning for that and went across the street. But this was right before the invasion of Iraq so maybe it was different then.

My AIT was ~16 weeks at the time.

as I recall (and it was a VERY long time ago)

in week 2 of Basic, we were issued our weapons and went through training on how to assemble and dissemble it.

first off, we had familiarization then went through the process of zeroing.

then we had two weeks or so on the range (to me that was the best part of basic training)

then the last week was daytime record fire and finishing up with night fire
