If government researchers were on the project as well as university researchers and the Feds bankrolled a majority of this same specific project, I don’t see any problems. So naturally, Trump is stealing all the knowledge and is bad. Bad bad.

In general I’m not averse to this, as universities will just pass along any royalties to commercial partners if the patent has commercial value. A couple of questions do arise.
-Since the US is part owner, does the university get a break on patent fees and/or patent maintenance costs? Co-owners often share these.
-It can get messy if a university enters into a research collaboration with a commercial entity, with all kinds of complications regarding arising IP and who owns this. Is the university given carte blanche to negotiate these rights, or will the government weigh in?

Currently, Sec Lutnick & President Trump are going after Harvard. 5,800 government funded patents producing $100 Million annually in revenue.

1. The University researchers are government employees . They don’t get paid by the private sector
2. Many of these Universities have large endowments, a good chunk of which is funded by patent royalties. No reason why the funder of the grant shouldn’t receive a fair share of the royalties.
In fact, this aligns incentives. Will help balance the budget leading to the country being in an overall stronger position.

These aren’t intractable issues. Can easily be worked out in a reasonable way.

nice to take some of the commercial fascism we do and change it to communism
patents are property of the PEOPLE

These colleges and universities are like mini fiefdoms, living lush and extravagantly off the backs of hardworking students and taxpayers.
They are largely responsible for the student debt crises.
And take up heaps of room in annual state and federal budgets.
About time they give a little back.

Every dollar of external revenue generated is one less that must be seized from the taxpayers who earned it at the point of a gun.

Is this some kind of nationalist socialism?

While it doesn't play in right now with this, here is a friendly reminder that Elon Musk and other big tech giants are big time proponents of abolishing all IP laws.

Did anyone catch how much money he said the Biden administration gave away?
It’s insane.
It’s insane.

Well, if we paid for the patented DNA structure of the #19 corona virus, we might as well own a piece of it.

Companies that spinoff from university research groups already pay taxes to the government

The government already owns assets like land, buildings, weapon systems, and power supply systems.
This is just another type of asset.

I've never seen this...
They always want their money...
The dastards also take patent rights from professors, researchers, PhD students and post Doc researchers.
Of course they then license it commercially... for a fee...
