Paul Skenes entered professional baseball with as much hype as any player in history.
Talent evaluators called him the most talented pitching prospect they had ever seen. Fans marveled at his triple-digit fastball, his pinpoint command and his mysterious “splinker” pitch that seemed to defy the laws of physics.
Now on Sunday, barely two years after the Pittsburgh Pirates chose him with the first overall pick in the 2023 draft, Skenes will make his 50th major-league start. And it’s fair to say he hasn’t merely lived up to those massive expectations—he has exceeded them in just about every conceivable way.
In fact, Skenes has been so spectacular that there’s now a reasonable case to be made that the 23-year-old is having the best start to a major-league career of any pitcher in more than a century.
Since joining the Pirates last May, Skenes has been practically untouchable. He leads MLB over that span with a 2.07 ERA, having allowed 66 earned runs in 287 innings. He ranks second in opponent batting average (.198) behind Cincinnati’s Hunter Greene and second in opponent on-base-plus-slugging percentage (.558) behind Detroit’s Tarik Skubal.

Would love to see one compare Paul's start to all-time greats like Koufax, Gibson, etc.

He doesn't just get strike outs even when hitters get on base Paul seems to get better. I have watched some games with him and a few times I have seen runners on first and second and no outs and he gets out of the inning with no runs allowed. He has the physical traits but his mental game is top notch also.

And to think he wouldn't have even been a weekend starter if he chose Tennessee

frick. Offf. It’s football season now.
I got this exact response during baseball season, and now I’m spreading’ the love.

Believe it or not, Koufax was not good when he started baseball. He was wild as hell and couldn't find the plate. But he finally overcame that and you know the rest.

He may end of the season under a 2.00 ERA and have a losing record. I’m curious to see if the voters will give him the Cy Young with a losing record.

I can satisfy your curiosity. The answer is YES.

Pittsburgh about to get rich when they sell Skenes.

Another young stud pitcher Jacob Misiorowski is 1 month older than Skenes, lol. Skenes is incredible with everything control, velocity, multiple pitches.

Misiorowski is a special talent and his numbers as far as pitch spin rates and speeds really pop. But he isn’t in the same league as Skenes when it comes to results. His last 7 games he has a 5.20 era and 1.34 whip. If he ever gets it all dialed in he will be dangerous.

When he made the roster over Tommy Lasorda, Lasorda said "Koufax. He'll never amount to anything."
