Marketing and Mountain Dew

Cracker Barrel straying from its core audience got me thinking about this.
The brand guys at Mt. Dew were great at marketing to youth. The brand had the smallest customer base of the top 10 brands, but the highest per cap consumption. Meaning those who drank it....drank a lot of it....and skewed very young.
Those of us in the high share markets argued for years for a Diet version and the brand just did not want to do it, the core consumer was about 20 years old who didnt care for diet drinks at all. It took years but they finally agreed to test it and the results were overwhelming and they launched nationally soon after.
Why? Because Mt. Dew's consumer was about 20 years old because it had so much friggin sugar. And although people loved the brand, as they aged they gave it up for something else. Once the diet came along they kept those consumers far longer in the product life cycle.
By the way VP Vance is a consumer
On the other hand, those idiots that forced Blue Pepsi on Jamaica what an idiot move that was, a story for another day.

I am pretty convinced the native populace here in Western NC is single handedly keeping Mountain Dew in business.

I go back to the days of the moonshiner on the glass bottles

I never have drank Mt Dew like I did when I went to summer camp outside Black Mountain.

Diet Dew became my go-to for a good while, but it got harder to find in stores for some reason. I still grab a bottle every now and then if I see it in the cooler.

I spent some time in the Appalachian sticks and it's some of the most beautiful land you can imagine but everywhere I went within distance of civilization there were empty mountain dew cans by the thousands. I am not exaggerating, this would have been 20ish years ago, so maybe things have changed

Just beware the sucralose/Ace K sugar substitute. Sugar alcohols like that are treated by your liver just like ethanol in alcoholic beverages.

I drink it every day. I'm enjoying one as I type this.

Good to know; I should probably just stick to alcoholic beverages then.

In Utah it’s called Mormon Dew because they drink so much of it.
Every gas station in Utah has both versions unless it’s a very old store with Indian owners.
There aren’t many Indian owners here by the way.
The 711 2 miles down the mountain from me is owned by whites. I didn’t think that was possible before moving here.

Mormon will not drink coffee or tea because of the caffeine in those beverages, but they drink Moutian Dew? Stupid Mormons.

I had to work the vending contracts for my hospital. The 3 must haves were Coke, Dr Pepper, and Mt Dew. Plus a diet version of each.
