How has Harlem Berry done this preseason?

I feel like with a lot of the concerns on the line, and most of our attention going to some key defenders on D, Barion Brown on O, he seems to be undershadowed on reports. Has he performed well in any of the scrimmage situations or had any meaningful plays? Obviously came in as a 5 star but it’s a big transition from 2-3A ball to the SEC. How has his transition been so far?

Frankly you dont get to hear much about RBs in this kind of setting because of the somewhat limited 11 on 11 compared to everything else, and what 11 on 11 they do have is often not open to the media. That's the only place you can truly understand how a RB is doing because positional drills, offensive walk throughs and 7 on 7 wont show you much. Also they rotate so much at that position a RB might only even get a few touches all practice in an 11 on 11 setting.

He’s got to put on weight which he will. I see him playing downs where we set up screens and he will also be in the slot on certain downs. May even play special teams. Who knows but he’s a hell of a talent

Has already put on about 20lbs since getting here according to him

It does already seem like he's getting more attention than Kaleb Jackson, which is simultaneously exciting and disappointing.

At 10:00 he states that he’s second most talented but still makes frosh mistakes. Fumbled after Singleton lit him up.

James Cook plays for the Buffalo Bills. He stands 5'11" tall and weighs 190 lbs, competing against bigger and more skilled opponents. The obsession some people have with weight should really be examined. You don’t need to weigh over 200 lbs; what matters is playing fast, staying in control, and having good vision. If you can do those things, everything else will fall into place.

He will be the future of our RB room but has been struggling with the physicality of SEC football. Nothing that is a major issue but that is the only knack on him so far.
He can score anytime he touches the ball.
He can score anytime he touches the ball.

Hes having a talented freshman camp. Making impressive plays that show his talent and potential but the next time hes on the field makes a big error. Missed an assignment in pass pro, fumbled the ball, and/or dropped a pass.
All this is to be expected from a talented true Freshman getting used to the speed of the game. Kaleb Jackson is going to be the primary backup HB for the first part of the year until he can catch up to the speed of the game and be trusted in pass pro and ball security. Will see the field against Clemson but hes really not going to turn into RB2 until a few games later.
Louisiana Tech and South Eastern are going to be big games for him early. Hes got immense talent though, honestly due to his size he might have more potential than Durham and we know what a good year he had last year and we all expect him to have a monster year this year.
Just be excited for the kid when his opportunities come.

No need to be so defensive about him putting on weight. I would bet you that Berry himself and the coaching staff would say that he probably needs to put on a little weight as well. The size and weight that a guy ideally plays at depends on a several different factors.

Tony Dorsett was only 190 lbs. It isn't size as much as strength and speed.

We shouldn't expect much from Harlem game one versus Clemson. Obviously Caden will be carrying the load with Jackson backing him up. But as the season progresses I hope Harlem earns more and more playing time to the point the coaches can't keep him out of the rotation.

Thanks Tyga and IM_4. Seems like you may have been to a few practices. I can't wait to see Harlem fly past defenders on his way to 6.

Transitioning from St. Martin’s to the SEC at such a physical position will take some time I’m sure. Talented as hell though, and great hands.

Don't mean to come off as hostile but it's crazy how many think you have to gain so much weight to play RB or play in the SEC.
Posted on 8/21/25 at 2:42 pm to Kool Kaliper
It’s not that you “can’t” play in the SEC at a certain weight. But there certainly is an ideal size for each individual based on their position, playing style, athleticism, etc. I don’t think it’s crazy to say that Berry probably isn’t at his “ideal” size. That doesn’t mean that he can’t or won’t contribute.
