Stupid question I know! But I’m techno TV stupid so there’s that.

For context, I don’t watch a lot of TV and rarely interested in movies. I’m GenX and raised on tube TV. Yet, I find myself sitting in front of TV loaded with Prime, Netflix, YouTube TV, Disney+ and what seems like endless sea of stuff I’m not interested in, no rhyme and no reason.

Local news, ESPN and occasional movie is all I need. Is search the only way to bring order to this madness? Where do you start?

If your tv is smart, it has preloaded channels you can scroll through just like an interactive tv guide.

Ours is a samsung and one of the apps is SamsungTV, it has a list of "live" channels.

I just don't unless there is a specific movie or sports program. I'll check in on news from time to time

Not saying that’s the cheapest option or anything but YouTube TV is very similar in some ways to old school cable, but it is also lots better in several real ways.

For local news, buy a digital tv antenna that plugs into your tv. You can toggle "input" on your remote to switch to it.

For ESPN, depends on what sports you watch. You'd likely need to subscribe to the ESPN channel.

Use the PlutoTV app that should be available through your tv. Has all kinds of good shite--national news shows, movies, sports, and best of all, classic tv shows.

Just get a good digital antenna and then set it to antenna and skip paying for any streaming. I get over 60 channels, mostly older stuff but the major networks have new shows. Honestly, the older stuff is better. I think there is old school history/discovery channel called "story Television" which are just old documentaries from HC and Discovery from 15 years+ ago. We get a cartoon channel that plays older cartoons. I'm Gen X so most of this is stuff from my childhood.

Don't pay a cent to any streaming network. I'm sure I'm missing stuff but I don't watch enough to justify the cost.

I watch a lot of sports and movies in my theater room and use direct tv stream, MLB app and Apple for renting movies. I’ll watch some shows on the streaming services on my tv in my living room for 1 to 2 shows before bed.

I know. I have to find stuff for my wife and for my mom, both of which can't seem to get past punching in channel 8 or 62 for their favorite channels.

If there's a set-top-box or some other wizardry, it blows them out of the water. So yeah, I get what you're referring to.

Just make a list of the channel numbers you like and don't punch anything else.

I just have a $15 digital antenna from Best Buy. Works well. There are lots of genre specific channels free over the air, and I can watch local news. The rest I just watch Netflix, HBO Max, and Paramount.

80% or higher of the shows and movies on all services is simply unwatchable garbage.

Stop watching TV, shows, movies all together. You will be amazed how much you can accomplish in a day without all that.

My only really distraction is TD now.

It’s so freaking hot outside right now that there’s not much else for me to do from 6 PM to 11 PM at night.

Sounds like you need YouTube tv for sports and news and something like Netflix for movies. You can download any other apps you want at a cost.

PlutoTV is good for low to mid level viewing with some good shows too. During the day I’ll put on various channels for background and low maintenance viewing like the Anthony Bourdain channel or nature/travel shows.
