How was it afterwards? Still about the same range of motion as before you ere messed up? I've got degen hip dysplasia. Shallow pelvic socket. apparently never had a good connection there and it ate away all my cartilage. Looking at getting one in the next few years. It doesn't hurt too bad right now and im not even 40 yet. Looking for general input.

Yeh, I’ve had one for same diagnosis. Left hip got really bad and I couldn't walk without extreme pain in my late 40s. You will be walking the day after the operation with a walker or cane. Sleeping will be the issue. Get the pain pills just be careful with them. Get your legs and butt muscles in shape now.

Dont do it until it legit hurts or doctor insist.
Had my done in BR few months ago. Feel great.
Get anterior cut instead of posterior cut.

I had bilateral hip replacement in May 2021. Yep, both hips at the same time on the same day lol.

It was a brutal 3-4 months after but I wish I had done it years sooner. I was only 40 at the time but had bad hip dysplasia to the point where it was all bone on bone and no cartilage.

Family member got it done. Apparently it’s a big guessing game as to how long to make the implant and half the time they get it wrong.

Before the surgery, I would have “flare ups” several times a month where my knees would get all inflamed and my hip flexors and groin area would get all tight and my lower back would be in serious pain. It was so bad that I could barely walk.

I dealt with that shite for 5-6 years then finally around 2016 I got diagnosed correctly and started to get steroid injections directly into my hips to help with inflammation. The injections stopped being effective after so many years so I did the surgery in May 2021.

It’s been amazing being able to walk or jog or run or squat up and down with no pain lol.

Every now and then I twist the wrong way or sit or sleep the wrong way and I can feel a little soreness but it’s very brief.

My wife had the same. On her feet the night of the surgery as soon as the nerve blocks started to wear off.

Research your surgeon and see a few to decide. They are all not nearly the same. You should be able to find one that specializes in replacements vs a sports ortho who is capable but doesn’t perform as many.

Research the brand of implant they want to use.

A relative had two Exactech hips implanted. They had to be removed/replaced after causing damage and being recalled.

There are over 1,800 lawsuits pending against the company related to this issue. I think other brands have had issues as well.

i have early stages of AVN (avascular necrosis) in both my hips. Doctor said eventually i will need a Hip replacement in right and maybe in the left. that it all depended on when i felt the pain was an issue.

curious on the response from those who had replacements

right now the pain is infrequent and tolerable, but i am 50 now, so when to wait and when is waited too long due to age...

I’ve had 2 done by Dr Craig Green at BROC, both were anterior approaches, this should be your preferred method as they don’t cut muscle which means quicker recovery,,,,you will have better ROM, and in both of my cases I was 100% back to normal around the 12 week mark,,,,use lotsa ice for two weeks after the surgery, do all the therapy and move around often, lastly, don’t wait to do it, the longer you wait, the more debilitated you will become,,,once you know you need it do it asap before you are in a weakened state

Can we bifurcate the OT into old crusty baws who need body parts replaced and the rest of us relatively young folk?

Hip replacement is one of the most successful procedures, not just in orthopaedics, but in all of medicine. >90% patient satisfaction rate and the recovery tends to be much easier than other joint replacements. The quality of life increase is fantastic across the board.

My dad had his hip replaced yesterday and was home in his own bed the same day. Has already walked a mile today. As others have stated, direct anterior approach tends to be a much easier short term recovery, but in the long term they all do well.

52yo. had mine done in Feb 25. I had a torn labrium and the best option was to just replace the hip instead of trying to fix the labrum and it possibly tearing again due to my femur/plevis alignment (thanks mom and dad)

Surgery went well and was getting noticeably better everyday afterward until 10 days after surgery and I tore a layer of subcutaneous sutures in the quad and hip flexor. Had to get back on the oxy to tolerate the pain. I had stopped with the oxy like 4 days after surgery. Even though I was only taking 1/2 to 1 pill per day just to help sleep for about 3 weeks they dug their claws in me and had some mild withdrawals when i stopped. Bascially it made it hard to sleep because I could not get comfortable (not from the hip) just a general restlessness. That lasted about another 2 weeks.

It took a about 4 weeks after the tear before I could stop using a cane because the muscles were shredded. Still dealing with some strength issues but getting better week by week.

Had both done in March 2020 before I was 40. Dr Broyles was the surgeon at bone and joint clinic. He’s now at BROC. Super path method. I was up and walking without assistance and even driving within a week of surgery. AVN was the reason for the replacements. Very little to no restrictions using this method. No 90 degree rule or anything.

I had my right hip replaced 9-10yrs ago, Dr Tim Randall @ Mid State Orthopedic. Was 1st case, walking that afternoon, released me the next day when I could walk around the ward. No driving for 10 days, back to work after 2 weeks. Began therapy within a couple days of surgery…
