If you bowl a 279, consisting of an open first frame and then 11 straight strikes, can you claim you were close to bowling a 300?

Whenever I bowl a strike on the first frame, I ask the people in the next lane over to please keep their voices and antics down because "I'm working on a perfect game here..."

when I was a teen, the first three frames I ever bowled in my entire life were strikes.

I don't know if I've thrown 3 strikes in the 30+ years since then combined.

My highest game was a 254. Had an open frame 8-0 (f*cking split) and a spare 9-/ and the rest were strikes. Was in a zone that day. What sucks is I had 10 of 12 possible strikes and still was 46 points from a 300. Bowling is tough.

And to answer the OP, I think yes.

Saw a guy in a tournament once hit 8 pins in the final frame for a 298. I was sick for the dude. So close.

When i was in HS a guy howled a 299

literally left 1 pin standing

i’m sure he doesn’t think about it

Bowling 12 consecutive strikes between the end of one game and the beginning of the next is nowhere even close to a 300. The pressure alone is totally different.

I watched a dude do that in league play. Jinxed himself on the last ball.

This is kind of the no hitter to a perfect game.

Yes. You were 1 pin away from a 300, so I’d say that counts as close

Mine was a 221. I used to bowl a lot when I was a teenager. I had 3 9s. The rest were spares and strikes.

What I have learned is that third game is usually a bad idea. But it is very tempting.

First game- getting warmed up. A few good frames, a few stinkers. Still score 120 or so.

Second game- bowling like a mad man. Usually score between 155-185. Let’s go again!

Third game- by the third frame, I’m already over it and would rather be just drinking beer. Sometimes I barely crack a hundred.

I am exactly the same. Every good game I’ve ever bowled has been the second game.

But mine may be related to 1st game not enough drink and stiff, 2nd game a few drinks in and feeling great, and 3rd game yep you had one too many and motor skills are suffering.

Yes, the last 11 in a row is close to a 300, but the pressure is gone because you already messed up.

I shot 279 years ago, with a ringing 10 pin in the fourth frame. That shot was better than some of the strikes, too.

This is the root of the question, but technically you never had a chance once the ball left your hand for the first time. So in that sense, you could be further away from a 300.

Exactly, if you walk the first batter of the game and then go the rest of the game not allowing a hit, were you close to a perfect game?

Last time I checked close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades.
