Why do so many struggle with the word sophomore?

Same as Alzheimer's... Drives me crazy when people pronounce it Alltimers...
You even hear news reporters pronounce it alltimers...

The two or three syllable issue is a legitimate linguistic debate.
Both ways are technically correct I tend to use the 2 syllable version the majority of the time but when reading it I tend to include a swallowed middle syllable.

The only time the 3-syllable variant was acceptable was when Keith Jackson was introducing college football players during the game of the week.
