You guys are in for a big surprise. All of this sounds great, but Randy Zeigler will be in the batting order somewhere by the time Conference starts. Go back and look at your lineup and find a place for him. He will be a better hitter than 3 or 4 of the guys there right now. Watch. No freshman will have near the impact he will, and he will pitch a lot.
+1
Ziegler really looked like an impact player in fall ball.

Ziegler will be a man this year - and just think about next year (if we can keep him that long)

What is Zeigler going to be the first player ever to leave after his Fr. year?

Seems like I read a few things about a guy named Matty Ott., What's your take on him , Adam ?

Relief Pitching
Louis Coleman (Sr.)
Paul Bertuccini (Jr.)
Jordan Nicholson (So.)
Ben Alsup (So.)
Ryan Byrd (Sr.)
Matty Ott (Fr.)
Randy Zeigler (Fr.)
Shane Reidie (Fr.)
Spencer Matthews (Fr.)
What a difference a year can make, from goat to hero defines Louis Coleman’s career at LSU. Recruited by then Turtle Thomas and Smoke Laval, Coleman was a highly touted prospect from the state of Mississippi. Selected in the 28th round by the Braves and the opportunity to play for a championship at LSU made his choice fairly easy to attend college. After having an up and down freshman season Coleman struggled to do anything as a sophomore. Finally after rigorous work on his mechanics with then Pitching Coach, Terry Rooney, Coleman delivered in a unique and different arm slot than by normal right handed side winders. What happened over the 08 season could be predicted by nobody and is still thought to be a major catalyst to LSU’s magical run. Coleman will start the first game of the season before handing the keys to Ranaudo, Ross, and Bradshaw hoping to lock the door on opponents in the closer role. Paul Bertuccini a RS Jr. from the New Orleans suburbs also had a stellar 08 season and expects to serve the same role of coming in an inning or two in tight situations to get others out of jams. Nicholson and Alsup two tall and lanky RHP’s got work early last season before giving way to more experienced pitchers during SEC. The key to LSU’s bullpen is if these two Ruston natives can eat up innings any way they can to turn it over to Bertuccini, Coleman, and even Ott. Ryan Byrd who had his best season as a sophomore is a lefty with an exceptional changeup and will be counted on to provided leadership and get outs in key situations vs. tough left handed batters. Matty Ott is the most impressive freshman pitcher in my book this year along with Matulis, his delivery is so fluid and his off speed pitches will help get outs in SEC play. Randy Zeigler, the kid originally committed to FSU has made quite the impression at the plate, however if he doesn’t end up in the batter’s box he will do just fine at his natural position, LHP. Shane Reidie a tall and imposing figure on the mound can run his fastball into the low 90’s although he may be the rawest hurler on the roster. A redshirt would do this kid wonders for the future, however he could pitch this year if called upon. Spencer Matthews the walk-on will lend depth to the Tigers bullpen.

Got my tickets to the first game in the box, can't wait

If even half of these guys produce like they are expected to, we should have a great pitching staff !

Could we have a possible P/DH situation for this kid?

Catcher
Micah Gibbs (So.) *
I got this from the Advocate's site...
After LSU moved into the new Alex Box Stadium, the switch-hitting Gibbs produced the first two home runs in scrimmages — one from the left side and the second from the right.

you could, but I don't know that you would want to have him doing both on the same day.

The reason I ask is that I cannot remember the last player at LSU to play the dual role. I would think it could become more common with the roster restrictions; at least coaches may look to find players that can do both at this level.

Adam4848 - excellent synopsis. I too am nervous about starting pitching. Their is no doubt that they have potential, just no track record. Until these guys perform in some big situations, starting pitching will be a mystery. I frankly was surprised the polls have the Tigers so high given the inexperience on the mound.

Smoke was a douche when it came to playing a player both ways.
he didnt pitch Clay Harris to late when he could have dominated

yeah Will is who i meant. He didnt pitch him until he was almost gone. Now he is a very good pitching prospect in the Rockies system.
though Clay and Will both could have been very good 2 way players. Though Will never really found it with the bat. I know both did a little 2 way here and there, but i think both should have pitched more.

quote:I agree with you. Will never really found any sort of groove at the plate and Smoke should have pitched him earlier. His success the last few weeks of his senior year and at the next level beg the question, why wasn't he given a chance? It is not like we had a deep pitching staff. I think he put up some really good numbers last year. As far as playing both ways goes, Skip had even less tolerance for it than Smoke. I can't say for certain that it is true, but the word at the time was that we lost several great players to other schools because Skip told them up front that they couldn't pitch and play the field. ( Brian Weise and Michael Aubrey were rumored to have wanted to come to LSU, but went to MSU and Tulane, respectively, because of this.)

Not only the roster restrictions, but the compressed schedule should make two-way players more prevalent as pitching staffs will have to be deeper.
