I don't know that .290 cuts it for a 3rd baseman. Catcher, SS or CF maybe, but IMO you should expect more from 3rd base in college baseball.

Luckily I think you have C and SS covered as far as batting over .300

Agreed. Anything over .280-.290 from these positions (assuming they are good fielders) is a bonus, which makes MG and DJL all the more valuable. Don't you agree that .290 from 3rd base should not cut it at this level?

We have the best offense in the league Kim Jong Kong. If the worst hitter on that offense hits .290, I will be so happy that I piss my pants.

I agree, players of Pontiff and Barbier caliber who could not only hit but for power was a sure bonus.

Personally I think Helenihi's going to come out of his slump, I've never seen anything like what he went through in May and June, but he's a veteran he's got a good head on his shoulders.

I agree that if the worst hitter in our lineup hits .290 then we'll be in great shape. But my point is that our worst hitter should not be playing 3rd base. If we don't have anyone who can hit better than .290 and play 3rd, then we don't have the hitters we think we have. I'm sure you know baseball and know that you can sacrifice hitting for defense at the middle infield and CF positions, where defense is a premium, but a slick-fielding .290 hitter at 3rd base is not the way to go.

There is no way to know how well or how poorly DH will hit this year

yeah, if he can hit around the .335 mark like he did most of the season, we'll be fine.

But if he is hitting .290, he better be playing sparkling defense because i dont think PM will hesitate to try someone else.

Ryan, just because he is a SR and looked at as the worst regular, doesnt mean we have to settle with his poor play

I said this last year too, but I don't think it was as much a slump as it was a regression to mean. He was billed coming in as a light-hitting defensive infielder. I think the incredible hot-streak was the aberration, not the cold streak.

Agree 100%. This is what I was trying to say to Ryan. Conventional wisdom says you need average and hopefully power from 3rd base and you sacrifice a little defense for this. Obviously if you can get it all you take it, but with all the talent we are supposed to have on this team we should not have a 3rd baseman hitting only .290.

Ryan,

What's your take on Gaudet? Any chance we see him at DH since Ochinko seems to have 1st locked up?

Gaudet's defense is not to good. Dean will move to OF so the DH spot will be open. We need the power in the lineup so we will probably stick him in there. I don't see any possibility of Gaudet starting at 1B.

Shortstop
DJ LeMahieu (So.) *
Austin Nola (Fr.)
Chris MeGhee (Sr.)
Every once in a while you stumble upon a kid, one who seems to work their way in between the college game and pro ball. The one scouts know will be great in time, but need time to polish. LeMahieu the top player in the state of Michigan as a senior in decided to attend LSU instead of signing a pro contract with the Detroit Tigers for an upwards up $250,000. So far he has reaped the benefits and is projected to be a first or second rounder in the upcoming draft. The way DJ is built at 6-4’ he can range over to balls no other college shortstops can even dream of reaching. His bat work which was displayed showed he could hit for power to the opposite side of the field if he had to. In most likely hood he will be gone after this year, however another powerful shortstop with the name Austin Nola will take the reins. If LeMahieu can reproduce what he did last year while limiting his early season errors LSU will not only have the best middle infield in the SEC, but in the entire nation.

Grade: A

He's listed at 6'2" 219, second only to Chad Jones among non-pitchers. I know size doesn't always equal power but, with Clark gone, it would be nice to have another big bat in the lineup.

Adam ?

Gaudet should get a lot of AB's. He's healthy and has lost some weight from last year and prob top 3 on the team in terms of raw power

if he hits early, he'll play. If not, they'll get someone else in there
