Trump will make gay marriage federal law if SCOTUS overturns Obergefell

Trump doesn't hate gay people and has said multiple times that he supports their right to marriage. He has gay people in this administration. It's not going anywhere and he certainly isn't going to let the issue railroad the midterms. The only hilarious part will be if Democrats vote against enacting it just to try and spite Trump.

I don’t disagree that Trump would sign a bill if it came across his desk to legalize it, but he can’t unilaterally make it law as you suggest. Congress would have to act. Which is how it should have been gone about in the beginning

No he won’t. Just like abortion, it’s something that belongs in the states.

The president can most certainly instruct Congress to take action. And no one can apply pressure like Trump.

I didn’t like that decision, and thought that Justice Kennedy really tarnished his legacy. But there’s no way to get this toothpaste back in the tube. It’s done.

There should be some legal difference between marriage and a "union" between two people. Marriage is the norm and involves a man and a woman.
A relationship, union, or partnership (whatever) between anything other than a man and a woman is not 5he same as marriage.

This is a loser for the GOP.
Tens of millions of gay, republican voters in America.

Or just leave marriage to the church.

they 100% will. they'll find a 'hook' to hate it.
Trump made dems:
- hate taxing rich people/corporations (tariffs)
- hate locking up violent criminals
- hate the one person on the planet who actually has a profitable EV ecosystem to 'save' mother earth
- hate a law making gay marriage legal
it really is amazing to watch

1) it won't happen
2) if it does, it will be similar to Dobbs - a state issue
3) a federal law likely would not pass constitutional muster

Of course it should, but the OP is right, Trump will sign it, and congress will pass it because it would be political suicide not to. Ironically, the latest percentage of Americans who support gay marriage? 69%. Trump and the Republicans aren’t as stupid as the Democrats who would charge that windmill.

bullshite
There are maybe 120 million GOP voters makes.
"Rens" is plural, so there is no way 1/6 or more of them are gay.
God damn this fricking board is infested with morons.

Yeah, he's going to go out of his way to piss off his base more for an issue he's lukewarm about.

I mostly agree with you but I don’t think it’s as cut and dry as you make it sound. I agree with the OP Trump supports gay marriage, but republican support for it has dropped to 39% down from 55% in 2022.

Who does? And what does that have to do with the constitution?

It was more than just his "base" that voted for him. And it's about not turning out your opponent in record numbers for the midterms. Trump will immediately take the wind out of their sails if Obergefell is overturned. And you can thank a gay man (Pressler) for helping get Trump reelected.
