Can you live in Knoxville Tennessee without a car?

I really don’t want to haul my car from Boston to Tennessee next year. I’m in the process of getting a PhD in communications and was wondering if it were doable to use public transportation? Would it be more wise to rent a car instead?

Not comfortably. But people live without a vehicle and make it work.

Also, you had a car in Boston but now don't want a car in Knoxville? You're doing it backwards.

Probably not. If you're going to rent a car, why wouldn't you just bring your car you already own?

The only places I would live without a car are NYC, DC and maybe a few other major inner cities.

I'll go up to Boston and get your car for you for a few dollars if you don't feel like driving

If anyone ever wondered why this generation can't pay back their student loans, here's your sign.

It's possible, yes, depending on where you live, but you'd miss out on a lot of what this area has to offer.

Dude, just drive down. You can do that in a long day of driving or stop one night.

Knoxville is too wide spread for you not to have your own transportation.

I wouldn't recommend it. If you're living downtown or on campus it's certainly more doable, but you'll be isolated to those areas of the city short of constantly catching an uber. Public transportation isn't great, but it is available. Locals (atleast within my circle) do not use it for everyday life. Most, not all, of your passengers are going to be people who can't afford a vehicle. Take that as you will. Keep in mind the city is in the foothills of the mountains so walking up and down the hills, especially around campus, isn't for the faint of heart.

Also, West Knoxville, which is a decent distance from downtown, is the most populated area of the city with a significant amount of the shopping, restaurants, bars, activities, etc located in it. There's just as much if not more to do spread out through West Knoxville as there is downtown short of bar hopping. IMO, not having a vehicle will significantly prevent you from being able to experience everything Knoxville & the surrounding area has to offer.
