Spirit Airlines Acknowledges that there is "Substantial Doubt" it can Continue Operations

It looks like Spirit's days may be numbered.

Spirit Airlines released its Q2 2025 quarterly 10Q filing and has indicated that there is substantial doubt that it will be able to continue operations over the next twelve months. The airline exited Chapter 11 Bankruptcy earlier this year but has been unable to turn a profit as it continues to burn through cash.
It is unclear what other options are available to the airline in order to improve its financial situation but a merger or liquidation seem like the the most viable options.

While I’ve never flown Spirit, this is probably bad as it will reduce pressure on the big airlines to compete and keep prices down.

I flew them once between Dallas and New Orleans just to try it out. Was an interesting experience but, in their First Class seats it wasn't bad.
Airlines like Spirit are the reason that Basic Economy got invented so it could definitely push prices upward if they go under.

I do like their non stops to Vegas.
That is the only time I have ever flown them.
I don’t think I will be buying any more tickets, at least not in advance.

didn't they try and merge with frontier airlines and DOT shut it down? now this.

The DOJ shut down their proposed merger with JetBlue. Frontier made multiple attempts to buy Spirit after they declared bankruptcy last year but Spirit decided not to do the merger.

Spirit is awesome if you want a direct flight somewhere and all you need is a backpack full of stuff.

Oh no, how are all the Hondurans in Kenna going to cope?

I fly Spirit to Orlando all the time, never had any problems. Hope they figure it out, don't want to lose out on my $50 flights.

This was the ultimate nail in the coffin and a mistake by the DOJ. I can't help but feel like the decision was 100% made to protect Delta, American and United. This will be a major blow for MSY if Spirit goes under. Demand and prices for Southwest flights will go through the roof. Spirit flies a lot of the same routes as Southwest and helps keep prices more competitive. I actually really enjoy flying Spirit's big front seats.

I just booked a quick weekend trip to Orlando for $125 total for 2 people. We can go with just a backpack each. It’s less than 2 hours so a Coke and no WiFi doesn’t bother me. Hope they don’t go away completely.

that sucks the big seat is the best value in the industry.

Everyone on here talking about how cheap they are to fly is making me laugh. Why do you think they can't turn a profit!

On the other hand, another airline can buy the planes for cheap, run the same services or others, and open up more travel options. It all depends on what happens. It's not like those planes will just be parked in an airplane graveyard forever.

When the judge ruled against the merger with Jet Blue, it was for 3x what Frontier's latest offer was.

“Today’s ruling is a victory for tens of millions of travelers who would have faced higher fares and fewer choices” if the deal had gone through, Atty. Gen. Merrick Garland said.

Wonder if Breeze can acquire some of the planes and routes. Have only flown Breeze once, but thought it was well run.
Really don’t want to see our options functionally dwindle to United, American, delta and Southwest, especially with federal agencies that will turn a blind eye to price collusion.
We recently returned from a Chicago trip. The big four airlines were all charging $79 and $80 for tickets to Chicago in May when we booked. In July they all went up to $91. There is no price competition between the big four. It only comes from frontier, spirit and a few of the novelty airlines like breeze.

May not be many planes to sell. In an effort to raise cash, Spirit has been selling planes to aircraft lessors and then turning around and leasing them back.

I've never flown Spirit before, and I despise the market that it caters to.
That being said, I have a trip in November and Spirit offers the only non-stop in the time window I need. I reluctantly booked it yesterday morning about an hour before this news came out. I just cancelled it this morning within the 24 hour window for a full refund. I will take another carrier with a connection and get in super late. I already didn't want to take Spirit and who knows how much worse it will get in the upcoming months.
