U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon visited a Baton Rouge elementary school on Monday morning to praise Louisiana's improved reading scores, her first stop on a cross-country tour as the Trump administration pushes to dismantle the Department of Education and grant more educational authority to the states.

McMahon said during a stop at the Jefferson Terrace Academy that she embarked on the “Returning Education to the States” tour to collect best practices that have shown educational success.

With Louisiana’s unprecedented improvement in national rankings, the state seemed a natural starting point, she said.

State Superintendent Cade Brumley, East Baton Rouge Parish Superintendent LaMont Cole, U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy and other officials toured classrooms Monday morning at the East Baton Rouge Parish public school with McMahon, the former head of World Wrestling Entertainment and the administrator of the Small Business Administration in President Donald Trump's first term.

Those tests weren’t administered during the Trump administration. Hard for the current Ed Secretary to take credit for them.

She's on a "dismantle the Dept of Ed" national tour. Considering her background in scripted reality TV wrestling and lack of expertise in education, "it's working" is likely the only commentary she can offer.

It's nice to see Louisiana in the news for something positive, though.

Wow you fools think the DOE has actually helped the nations children learn. Go look at test scores that have been on a steady decline ever since the DOE came into existence.

Supt Brumley is not a radical leftist progressive. He and his team are educators not idealists and have common sense. That is where the changes in Louisiana came from. The old regime of progressives under Edwards, etc was rejected by BESE.
Supt Brumley and HIS new team finally started to fix Louisiana education. Actually great that Louisiana and Mississippi are not even close to last in K-12 education any longer.

These great scores were achieved under the old regime (it's 2023 data). BESE is corrupt.

I know. It was all under the old regime.
Superintendent Brumley has only been in charge since 2020, 3 years before your comment about an "old regime". He was responsible for the 2023 results. And the BESE board was replaced too.
Nobody is corrupt on BESE.

It's the only response need to highlight the benefits of Federalism.

You can add Fountas and Pinnell.

And Heinemann publishing, who took in $1.6B in a decade to teach kids how not to read.

Class action suit should be filed.

Care to elaborate why the federal department of education is needed when each state has their own? Bonus points for pointing out the measurable successes when compared to national rankings from the founding of the department of education to now.

She's not "taking credit" for them. A couple years ago, Louisiana radically changed how we teach reading and matriculate students out of primary school by following the example set by Mississippi. The result has been FAR fewer students reaching middle school without attaining decent literacy skills. This has had a huge positive impact on our educational scores in a relatively short period of time. Linda McMahon is complementing the Louisiana policymakers for making this change and acknowledging how it is working. She's not taking credit, she's giving it.

Waaa waaaaa. We can't give any undeserved wins to Trump. He gets too many on his own.

Has La. switched to using Phonics instead of Whole Word? That's the easy way to improve reading. And it doesn't cost anything.

Preston Castille is. He's financially benefiting from taxpayer dollars through his charter network while also claiming to be in favor of strong public education (as he works to privatize it). That's such a glaring conflict of interest - that dynamic could only exist in Louisiana.

I remember having to do F&P testing my second year teaching. We wasted a whole day of instruction testing every kid in the building multiple times that year. What a ridiculous concept.

That’s probably the least objectionable part of their curriculum.
