It’d have to beat B&J’s.

I have lived in Hammond 20 years and never eaten there, and don’t know anyone who’s ever eaten there. So it’s either a hidden gem I’m missing out on or it’s not really that good

Murphys has been open for 60 years I’m Hammond so I wildly really call it a hidden gem. It’s also right on N Morrison in a big building.

OP: Murphys and Catfish Charlie’s used to be the best seafood in town. Catfish Charlie’s has been closed for a while but it had gone really downhill before closing.

Murphys had a fire or something a while back and the renovated. When they reopened around 2010 the food seemed a little off. It’s still decent, but so many more things have opened Hammond that are better, and older places like Chookies and Murphys have kind of gotten passed up for seafood dishes. The fried food is still fine there, but honestly it’s nothing special and isn’t even on our rotation.

On a side note, the Dons in Hammond is surprisingly good. Cait Street had kind of fallen off, but it’s been pretty good the last 2 times I’ve been. B&J seafood is very good and if I’m wanting fried seafood I would probably just get it from there. Their boiled seafood is always really good as well.

What kind of “seafood” are you looking for?

My parents thought it was .. like in the 80s. Surprised it’s still open.

I've lived in Hammond for most of my 54 years and we eat at Murphy's at least once a month. In my opinion they make one of the best steaks in our area. Their spaghetti and meatballs are close to what your Nonna would make, and their seafood dishes are very good.
I think that they've recently switched to imported shrimp, so I stay away from that.

Side note: We ate at Chookie's Saturday, and it was very good. Hadn't tried there in 3-4 years.

ETA: B&J's Seafood is the best in Hammond. You just can't go wrong with fresh off the boat local seafood.

It’s an old school restaurant that may or may not appeal to some younger folks, given the options/ alternatives around today. Decent fried seafood, some Italian options and steaks. Has a salad bar. We enjoy it but I’m old and biased. Known big Phil for fifty, plus years. Lived in the apartments, behind there, on two separate occasions, back when I was young and studly, forty-five or fifty years ago. They were fairly new and some of the nicest in town. My son cooked at Murphy’s fifteen, or so, years ago.

Place has been well maintained over the years and the menu has changed but not a lot. Service is always good. Had some consistency issues after the son took over but that was in the past. Not going to be mind blowing and there’s folks I know that don’t care for it at all but as said, my wife and I enjoy it and will continue to visit until either it or we are gone. :)

Thanks for all the responses. I am in my mid 70's now but ate at Murphy's 4 or 5 times about 50 or so years ago and really liked it.. I was somewhat taken aback Saturday when I visited my granddaughter who lives in the apartments that another poster mentioned and lo and behold there was Murphy's. I plan on dining there on my next visit
