Because they are cheaper to make and more likely to be profitable compared to blockbusters.

And they’re working double time since Hollywood can’t make comedies anymore.

Because horror is cheaper. It's arguably been the strongest genre in the past year. Some other good ones are The Substance, Smile 2, Bring her Back, Companion, Longlegs.

WB is genius with its marketing as well. With Weapons, The Conjuring movies, etc. they make bank on horror.

Because creativity in Hollywood died about 15 years ago, if it’s not a horror movie, chances are pretty good that it’s a remake.

Odd, the horror stories are pretty original, huh?

* and that is partially my point. I’m not an aficionado on horror but it seems like these are pretty well made and well received.

Maybe those who watch more of these movies can add their two cents.

Yes, to a large extent. Now some reboots/sequels/prequels are trying to latch onto the popularity of the more original content, but many (most?) of them are failing. Wasn't that new Exorcist movie a huge failure, in terms of reviews and B/O?

Now, I'm not a fan of most of these new elevated horror movies, but they do offer a high technical quality that's lacking in many movies. They also do try to give you something new, even if it's been done to death (Nosferatu).

This is the only genre that studios permit to be made in any quantity with mid-level budgets ($50-75M), also.

The mid-level drama is deader than comedy.

I think they’re starting to get critical acceptance too so more talented people are now making them

The talent is out there.

It just needs to be allowed to show up.

* ETA And by “allowed”, I mean studios need to take more chances. Snowflakes think I’m only talking about DEI stuff. Yes, that, but also in the general sense.

There are some really good horror directors and writers out there right now. Horror movies have been pretty damn good lately. That, combined with high profit margin, is probably the reason
