If anyone's interested...
quote:

Patellar tendinitis, commonly known as jumper's knee, is an injury characterized by inflammation or degeneration of the patellar tendon, which connects the kneecap (patella) to the shinbone (tibia).

It is primarily caused by repetitive stress on the tendon from activities involving frequent jumping, such as basketball and volleyball, although it can also result from running, squatting, or other repetitive knee-loading movements.

The condition develops when repeated stress leads to tiny tears in the tendon, causing pain, tenderness, and stiffness, typically localized just below the kneecap.

Symptoms often start mildly during activities like jumping or starting movement but can progressively worsen, affecting daily tasks such as climbing stairs or rising from a chair.

Risk factors include male sex, high training volume (over 20 hours per week of impact exercises), sudden increases in activity intensity, tight or imbalanced thigh muscles, and certain chronic illnesses that affect blood flow.

Treatment typically begins with rest, ice, and physical therapy focusing on strengthening the quadriceps muscles, particularly through eccentric exercises, to improve tendon load tolerance.

That’s definitely not insignificant. He’s at a high risk to rupture it which is basically a career ending injury for most people. Will also effect strength and depending on which leg if it’s his right leg could hamper him big time trying to drive the ball. Depending on severity can take months to heal. Ask me how I know haha.. I’ve had it and it frickin sucks.

This is why they said he was "OK" and not that he was uninjured. They need to rest him so this doesn't linger until the first game.

Hey Grok Is PT a pain tolerance thing for QBs?

quote:

Patellar tendinitis, often called "jumper's knee," is an overuse injury causing pain just below the kneecap, where the patellar tendon connects to the shinbone. For a quarterback (QB), it’s not purely a pain tolerance issue—it’s a condition that can affect performance due to physical limitations, though mental toughness plays a role in managing it.

The patellar tendon is critical for explosive movements like sprinting, cutting, or pushing off during throws, all of which QBs rely on. Pain from tendinitis can limit knee extension strength and power, potentially altering mechanics—e.g., reducing drive off the back leg or affecting footwork in the pocket. Studies suggest patellar tendinitis can reduce quadriceps strength by up to 20-30% in severe cases, which could impact throwing velocity or scrambling ability. Chronic cases may also lead to compensatory movements, increasing risk of other injuries like ACL strains or hip issues.

Pain tolerance comes into play because mild cases can often be managed with proper treatment (rest, physical therapy, or bracing) while still playing. Elite athletes, including QBs, often push through discomfort, especially in high-stakes situations. For example, NFL QBs like Tom Brady and Drew Brees have played through similar nagging injuries by relying on mental resilience and modified training regimens. However, ignoring it risks worsening the condition—tendinitis can progress to tendinosis (degenerative tendon damage) if untreated, potentially sidelining a player for weeks or requiring surgery in rare cases (e.g., partial tendon tears).

A QB’s ability to “tolerate” patellar tendinitis depends on severity, pain threshold, and how well they manage it. Mild cases might be a grit-it-out scenario with minimal performance impact, but moderate to severe cases can measurably hinder mobility and power, making it more than just a mindset issue. Effective management—through targeted exercises like eccentric quad strengthening, proper warm-ups, and load management—can keep a QB functional without relying solely on pain tolerance. If you’re asking about a specific QB or situation, I can dig deeper into relevant examples or data if you’d like.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think for a second it's Brian Kelly when they glance at Scott Raballais's pic on his X feed? Especially in these threads where he is quoting Brian Kelly.

idk how to feel about this. glad it wasn't an ACL but doesn't this create the assumption that this will linger throughout the season?
